My wifi was connected but the access point required loading a web form and entering a user name and password. I had been logged in but been dropped and had to re-authenticate. Once I logged back in it worked fine. I think the error message could be a bit more insightful. share|improve this answer answered Jul 22 '10 at 18:02 JD Long 28.7k33141218 It's useful to state your R version number (?) and platform (Linux 64b). If it has not already been fixed in a recent version, send them a bug report... –smci May 11 '12 at 19:26 Thanks @smci. The platform was 64 bit Linux and the R version was 2.11. That's implicit in the lib assumption that R makes, however, I agree that it's good to be explicit when asking questions. –JD Long May 18 '12 at 11:51 Agreed. My point was to prove to people that you had checked it was not a documented known issue, or worse still, an already solved issue :) R surprises me in that every time I personally have been on the point of posting an SO question about an error message, and done a preliminary check, it was very rare that the issue was completely unknown (a

I will take a shot though. The chooseCRANmirror function looks like this: function (graphics = getOption("menu.graphics")) { if (!interactive()) stop("cannot choose a CRAN mirror non-interactively") m <- getCRANmirrors(all = FALSE, local.only = FALSE) res <- menu(m[, 1L], graphics, "CRAN mirror") if (res > 0L) { URL <- m[res, "URL"] repos <- getOption("repos") repos["CRAN"] <- gsub("/$", "", URL[1L]) Ben Bolker at Mar 2, 2011 at 7:05 pm ⇧ Ag

Description Jitterbug compatibility account 2010-01-07 02:09:17 UTC From: chrishold@psyctc.org Full_Name: Chris Evans Version: 2.10.1 OS: Windows XP sp3 Submission from: (NULL) (86.159.235.204) I was on leave and using a wifi internet connection in France and got connected, launched R (2.10.1 on Windoze XPsp3) error in m and tried to update my packages and got: > chooseCRANmirror() Error in m[, 1L] : incorrect number of dimensions It took me a bit to realise that the message was coming up because the wifi connection had dropped. I know it's a small issue but is it possible to produce a more informative error message. I can see a bodge of changing chooseCRANmirror to: function (graphics = getOption("menu.graphics")) { if (!interactive()) stop("cannot choose a CRAN mirror non-interactively") m <- getCRANmirrors(all = FALSE, local.only = FALSE) ### bodge added here if (ncol(m) != 8) stop("There was a problem with access to CRAN mirrors, please check your internet connection") ### end of bodge res <- menu(m[, 1L], graphics, "CRAN mirror") if (res > 0L) { URL <- m[res, "URL"] repos <- getOption("repos") repos["CRAN"] <- gsub("/$", "", URL[1L]) options(repos = repos) } invisible() }
