I found http://blog.bombcar.com/2009/02/diablo-ii-on-vista.html the first registry fix on almost every other site, but it was the "Desktop fix" that completed it and got me back into the game I know and love. I waited in line, then installed it on June 29, 2000, the day it was released. =] Great find man, you're helping a lot of folks out. October 25, 2009 at 9:27 PM Cody said... Worked like a charm! I am installing the Diablo 2 on win 7 32bit.Encountered the same problems as everyone. "No start menu entry found"andthe string line 14 error "desktop"Every place you look is saying to correct the registry.I tried that but it wont work. And I figured out why.Do exactly as its been told to find the right place to correct the reg but instead of putting in the long line C:\\Users\\%USERNAME%\\AppData\\Roaming\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs just click new/string line and write Programs and do the same with Desktop simplyThe Point Forums Games DiscussionPC/Mac/Linux SocietyPlayStation NationXbox AssociationNintendo Fan ClubSystem WarsOff-Topic DiscussionGameSpot GiveawaysBug Reporting & FeedbackSee all ForumsAA Sign in / Join GameSpot Forums PC/Mac/Linux Society Diablo 2 install fails in Vista This topic is http://www.gamespot.com/forums/pc-mac-linux-society-1000004/diablo-2-install-fails-in-vista-25691704/ locked from further discussion. First, when i run INSTALL.EXE, i get this message:"No program start menu found"I managed to error in get around this by editing a registry. But right after I've chosen install directory, I get a new message:"Error in script file SetupDat\inst.ins, line 14: undefined symbol (desktop)."I googled this and found someone who solved it, but it was in Wine and I guess that's only for Linux users. So, anyone know what to do? Neither SetupDat or inst.ins shows up in a search error in script of the CD contents. smoothanddeadlyMember Since: June 20, 2004Posts: 59smoothanddeadlyFollowForum Posts: 59Followed by: 0Reviews: 0 Stacks: 0Forum Karma: 0#2 Posted by smoothanddeadly (59 posts) - 9 years, 3 months ago Did you try running the .exe file in Win XP compatibility mode? But I got it working a while ago. I installed it on another computer (running Windows XP), copied the files to my computer and manually ran VideoTest once again, and it works good enough so I can log on to Battle.net and keep my characters from expiring =) Ein-7919Member Since: August 16, 2003Posts: 3490Ein-7919FollowForum Posts: 3490Followed by: 0Reviews: 0 Stacks: 0Forum Karma: 0#4 Posted by Ein-7919 (3490 posts) - 9 years, 3 months ago That is really peculiar, since I was able to install Diablo 1 and 2 under Vista and they both run perfectly (although, the Diablo 2 video test somehow detected the Glide rendering API on my computer....)
