However, the other day on boot the machine came up with a "LOADER ERROR 3" message. I was able to get rid of this problem by booting off of the Win2k setup disk and going into the Recovery Console and then running a FIXBOOT. Everything then runs fine for one or two boot cycles and then the problem reappears. I have also tried running an exhaustive CHKDSK from the Recovery Console, as well as a FIXMBR. I have also copied over the BOOTLDR from the setup disk in case mine has become corrupt. Everytime it goes away it just comes back, but FIXBOOT always fixes it (at least temporarilly). The laptop had its hard drive upgraded about 2 months ago. We used Casper XP to copy the original 40GB drive to an 80GB drive. There were no problems with the new drive for 2 months until about 10 days ago. When the first "Loader Error 3" problem occurred, we checked the drive to find that there was a second partition on it - about 64MB with some system files. This partition was probably a copy of a diagnostic parti

(Usually booting with an install CD and repairing Windows works, but we aren't provided with the Administrator account password *rolls eyes*)We've been having this problem nation wide, so it's quite frustrating. In my company, it's not uncommon, over the course of some weeks, for 30-50 different USB drives to be plugged into a single computer. This error can occur when the "Safely remove drive" function is not used and subkeys are left in the SYSTEM registry hive. Specifically in HKLM\SYSTEM\Mounted Devices. The entries always start with "\??\Volume{" followed by a unique identifier. The solution is to delete those keys before too many are added to the registry, which can cause the Loader Error 3.If you need to recover from the error. Use a boot CD like BartPE or ERD Commander to copy the SYSTEM hive to a USB drive, mount it in regedit on a seperate computer, delete the keys, unmount, and copy back to the downed system. This is a VBScript I wrote today that searches the specified location for any subkey containing the text "\??\Volume{" and deletes those keys. With regular use (logon script perhaps), this should eliminate the e
