The argument is null or empty string. Parameter name: domainName Windows Server > High Availability (Clustering) Question 0 Sign in to vote I get a non-recoverable error when I try to form a new cluster from the GUI. I get to the point where I am to assign the cluster name and its IP address. After I enter the information and pressing next I get the following message: Error in Validation. The argument is null or empty string. Parameter name: domainName Pressing OK closes the wizard and returns to Failover Cluster Management. This happens if I add just one or both nodes to the Create cluster wizard. However, using the cluster.exe command to form the cluster with just one node works successfully. Adding the second node through the GUI now works. Is this just a GUI BUG or is it something that the CLUSTER.EXE command isn't robust enough to handle when it forms the cluster? Background Info: I'm trying to form a two-node cluster for Exchange CCR using a File Share Withness. All validations comlpete successfully except for the tests for shared storage. I managed to get around this problem by using the CLUSTER.EXE command but it would have been nice to know what causes the error in the GUI. (An error message that is a bit more descriptive would have been nice too...) LA. The number of characters (0) in the argument is too small up vote 2 down vote favorite 1 Its my first day with powershell scripting I am trying using VMM Cmdlet Get-SCVirtualMachine it works fine when I use it like PS C:\> $VM = Get-SCVirtualMachine -Name "VM01" But it gives me an error when I try PS C:\> $vmName = 'VM01' PS C:\> $VM = Get-SCVirtualMachine -Name "$vmName" The error I get is Cannot validate argument on parameter 'Name'. The number of characters (0) in the argument is too small. Specify an arg ument whose length is greater than or equal to "1" and then try the command again. Can someone tell me what is it that I am doing wrong? Thanks powershell share|improve this question edited Sep 7 '12 at 4:54 asked Sep 6 '12 at 14:37 poshak 3538 What does $vmName.GetType() print? And $vmName | Get-Member. –n0rd Dec 3 '15 at 22:32 I cannot reproduce the error using the code provided. That error message is a result of a [ValidateLength(1, x)] attribute on the Name parameter, when the parameter value is $null or empty (has length 0). The variable $vmName is somehow being reset prior to calling the cmdlet, which isn't possible with the code you posted. This question cannot be answered without posting the actual original code that reproduces the problem. –Ryan Bemrose Sep 5 at 23:02 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote try $VM = Get-SCVirtualMachine -Name $vmName share|improve this answer answered Sep 6 '12 at 14:45 CB. 34.4k25674 When I try this, I get the following error >Cannot validate argument on parameter 'Name'.
