He asked the Answer Line forum for help. The Windows 7 version of Windows Explorer can preview .jpgs, .pdfs, and other popular formats. Select Organize>Layout>Preview pane to see a file's contents. But it can't always preview .docx, .xls, and other Microsoft Office file formats. I know of three possible reasons. You don't have Microsoft Office Explorer needs Microsoft Office installed to read the popular suite's various formats. I'll leave you to guess at Microsoft's motivations for that shortcoming. The files you're trying to preview are very old The age of the files could be causing the problem. As a security precaution, Word 2010 won't open .doc files created in a version of Word earlier than 97 (the format was more susceptible to macro viruses, back then). And if Word won't open them, it won't help Windows Explorer preview them, either. Excel behaves similarly. Here's how to fix the problem in Word 2010: Click the File tab (dark blue and immediately to the left of Home). Click Options in the left pane. I can start my computer, open Word, and in the selection window select a document, and an image of the document will appear in the right hand portion of the window. Then I can do almost anything -- print, edit, select a different document -- and I get the message, "This file cannot be previewed because of an error in the print preview word Microsoft Word previewer." If I reboot, I can again use the previewer, but only once. The same thing happens when I look at Word documents in Microsoft Windows Explorer. This also happens for Microsoft Excel previewer, but it's a little more robust; I cannot remember not being able to use it in Windows Explorer.
