MCH1202 is telling you that by subtracting a longer variable size from the shorter variable size the result might be truncated. I imagine the reason it works in your second example is that you are maxing out to the absolute length of the B value and also A is the same length which sort of "Fakes" the AS/400 into letting it know there's no loss of data. however if you use a smaller value, less then the full length the AS/400 is trying to let you know you may incure some loss of data during a computation. You receive a MCH1202 DATA DECIMAL ERROR. Processing inbound data (PRCTRNIN) and the EBDI001 Errors Encountered Processing Incoming Data report hangs. In the AS/400 joblog, you see the error message MCH1202, http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/itanswers/mch1202-error-in-cobol400/ data decimal error. Cause The inbound data is using the Hex character 1E as an Inter-Record separator. On the Communications Profile ID, the Inter-Record Separator value is set to *NONE. The comm session is http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21539594 not stripping the 1E out of the data, and EBDI001 is not able to process it, so the MCH1202 is generated. Resolving the problem Modify the Communications Profile ID. Change the 'Inter-Record Separator' to 3780 so the Comm Process can strip out the Hex 1E.
