The connect descriptor received by the listener specified a SID for an instance (usually a database instance) that either has not yet dynamically registered with the listener or has not been statically configured for the listener. This may be a temporary condition such as after the listener has started, but before the database instance has registered with the listener. Error: ORA-12500 Listener failed to start a dedicated server process Resolving the http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21348364 problem This is an Oracle error message being returned from the Oracle database layer. First, confirm that a successful connection can be made outside of Impromptu or Framework Manager, in SQL*Plus, using the same login. If this is successful confirm that the following is not true. For Impromptu: If the Oracle instance that the Impromptu catalog accesses has been changed, (under the Catalog Tables dialog), then the catalog was redistributed to Users, the logical Database Name in the Database Definition will remain the same. However, unless the same changes are made on the users' machines, the above error may occur. This is due to the old instance still being referenced in the cognos.ini file. Remark out the the database definition in the cognos.ini, and reopen the catalog to reenter the connection information in the ini file, or copy the cognos.ini file from the administrator's machine to replace the users' cognos.ini files. Note: Confirm the paths are correct in the ini if copying over this file. Always back up ini files before making any changes. For F
configuration, and use of SQL*Net will go smoothly, and you will have no problems. However, inevitably errors will occur. All the error messages you may receive when using Oracle networking products are described in https://www.bnl.gov/phobos/Detectors/Computing/Orant/doc/network.804/a48385/apc.htm the Oracle Network Products Troubleshooting Guide. However, for your convenience, this appendix describes seven of the most common error messages in detail. They are: ORA-12154 ``TNS:could not resolve service name" ORA-12198 http://www.verycomputer.com/159_d1da46750c2d449d_1.htm ``TNS:could not find path to destination" ORA-12203 ``TNS:unable to connect to destination" ORA-12500 ``TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process" ORA-12533 ``TNS:illegal ADDRESS parameters" ORA-12545 ``TNS:name lookup failure" ORA-12560 ``TNS:protocol error in adapter error" For information on other error messages, and to learn more about error logging and the trace facility, see the Oracle Network Products Troubleshooting Guide. Common Sources of Error: Configuration Files The most common cause of problems in making a SQL*Net connection is in the structure or location of the configuration files. Syntax Errors The syntax of the files must be followed ora-12514 error in precisely. If you create the files using Network Manager, syntax errors should not occur. However, if you create or edit them by hand, check them carefully to see that all the appropriate parentheses are in place, that the lines are indented to show their logical structure, and that there are no typographical errors. See Appendix B, "Syntax Rules for Configuration Files," for details on the syntax of these files. Be sure that all service names are mapped to connect descriptors in the TNSNAMES. ORA file. Location Errors The TNSNAMES.ORA file must be distributed so that it is available to all nodes that make connections using SQL*Net version 2 (unless Oracle Names is being used on the network). A unique LISTENER.ORA file must be distributed to each node that includes one or more databases. In a network that includes one or more Interchanges, a unique TNSNAV.ORA file must be available to all the clients which have similar navigation requirements. Every node with an Interchange must have an INTCHG.ORA, a TNSNET.ORA, and a TNSNAV.ORA file. See the Oracle operating system specific manual for your platform for the exact l
Bill Tka » Thu, 31 Jul 1997 04:00:00 Does anyone have any idea what this problem may have been caused by, and what the remedy is? It occurs when trying to connect to the databse via SQL*Net 2. Help SQLNet Error - ORA 12598 Hi, After installing Oracle 7 Developer 2000 on a Windows 3.1 PC using PCTCP OnNet stack, I am getting an error of ORA 12598 while trying to use SQLPlus 3.1 and trying to connect to a database whose alias is specified in tnsnames.ora. I know that the TCP/IP stack works okay, since I can ping out and connect to the machine with the database using standard methods like telnet. While using the Oracle Net test utility I get the same error ORA 12598 and it complains about problems with native services. When I get the same error in SQLPlus 3.1 it says: ORA 12598 - Cnct Error Can't get text of Error Message. Has anyone else had any experience with the same error code and if so is there any fix available. During the installation of Oracle I took all the recommended defaults so the installation is as standard as it gets. Any help will be appreciated. Best Regards, Arup Ray 2.
