Rsync Error Module Is Write Only
up Here's how it works: Anybody can ask a question Anybody can answer The best answers are voted up and rise to the top Rsync over ssh: “ERROR: module is read only” suddenly appeared up vote 7 down vote synology rsync permission denied favorite 4 I've used from some time rsync/ssh to backup my shared host contents to my personal Synology NAS (212j for that matter), and it worked quite well. For information, I use a password-less ssh connection. 3 days ago, I updated my NAS software and since (or at least I believe it's since that), the backup won't work anymore. I get the following error on the host: rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes to socket [sender]: Broken synology rsync server pipe (32) ERROR: module is read only ..which I do not understand. beside that nothing changed that I know of in both source and destination that can be related to rsync or ssh, I did check a few things and all seems to be alright: I can still connect through ssh from the host to my NAS with the good user, so ssh stuff like keys haven't changed. I also have the correct file permissions on the NAS (I checked, and also tried to create files, directories, .. with the user used by rsync through ssh). I read here and there that the error means that I have to ensure that my rsyncd.conf have the right read only = no in it, but as far as I know, I never used rsyncd as well as I never configured anything for it and until now it worked like a charm.. I use the following command to do the backup: rsync -ab --recursive \ --files-from="$FILES_FROM" \ --backup-dir=backup_$SUFFIX \ --delete \ --filter='protect backup_*' \ $WDIRECTORY/ \ remote_backup:$REMOTE_BACKUP/ So I'm stuck and really can't figure out what happened. Edit: As suggested in comments, I also tried passing commands to ssh (but not from inside a ssh session), that worked as expected, and also tried a single rsync command, which didnt worked, failing just like the complete backup command. Is this something on my server or on my NAS? I found a tip to set the relative directory in rsync configuration file but there's nothing like this on my server. Thanks for any help Logged banane Newbie Posts: 37 Re: rsync module is read only « Reply #1 on: January 16, 2016, 08:05:08 http://forum.centos-webpanel.com/backup/rsync-module-is-read-only/ AM » are you using the admin user on Synology? because you have to, there's no other chance on DSM Logged Kubitomakita Newbie Posts: 5 Re: rsync module is read only « Reply #2 on: January 16, 2016, 09:32:43 AM » Thanks for the tip.I have created special user for the backups.Just checked the admin user and the same thing. SSH ok, directories created, no files transferred with error "module is readonly".root user can't log in via SSH. His home directory is /root. I'm afraid if changing it will not break my DSM and I don't want to store backups there.Checked chmods, checked home directories permission and seems to be ok there. I have no idea what is going on.PS. Chmod 755 and chown to admin on cwp_remote directory didn't helped. « Last Edit: January 16, 2016, 10:07:47 AM by Kubitomakita » Logged Administrator Administrator Hero Member Posts: 1259 Don't forget to donate Re: rsync module is read only « Reply #3 on: January 17, 2016, 01:19:49 AM » can you contact support so we could check thishttp://centos-webpanel.com/contact Logged AntiDDoS Protection (web + mail)http://centos-webpanel.com/website-ddos-protection-proxyJoin our Development Team and get paid !http://centos-webpanel.com/develope-modules-for-cwpServices Monitoring & RBL Monitoringhttp://centos-webpanel.com/services-monitorDo you need Fast and FREE Support included for y

It works between the server on my hom windows 7 box (using deltacopy also).however i can't seem to get it working on the centos side.I followed the tutorial here to set it up : http://am3n.profusehost.net/index.php?id=70I followed it to the error module is letter and triple=checked everything. Ports are opened. A list of available shares can be gotten. However the following syntax yields the following error :Executing: rsync.exe -v -rlt -z "/cygdrive/D/Documents/test.xls" "user@server::Documents/Documents/test.xls"building file list ... doneERROR: module is read onlyrsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at main.c(747) [receiver=2.6.8]rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (4 bytes received so far) [sender]rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at /home/lapo/packaging/rsync-3.0.4-1/src/rsync-3.0.4/io.c(632) [sender=3.0.4]Error in rsync protocol data streammy share under rsyncd.conf is set to read-only = false so I'm at a loss as to whats happening.Any help ? Enable SSH Via the web interface, go to Control Panel - Terminal & SNMP and check Enable SSH Service Step 2: Add a user Control Panel - User - Create. Step 3: Grant SSH access SSH as root and edit the passwd file vi /etc/passwd Make sure the user has a shell instead of /sbin/nologin ... mynewuser:x:1028:100::/var/services/homes/mynewuser:/bin/sh ... Step 4: Enable the User Home Service Control Panel - User - Advanced - Check Enable user home service Otherwise, you'll see something like this: Could not chdir to home directory /var/services/homes/mynewuser: No such file or directory Step 5: Disable root login vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config ... #LoginGraceTime 2m PermitRootLogin no #StrictModes yes #MaxAuthTries 6 ... Note that in order to gain root access once this is done, either enable telnet or install sudo. You can no longer SSH as root, and mynewuser is not allowed to su. Step 6: Backup stuff using rsync /usr/bin/rsync -a -e /home/erik/importantfiles/ mynewuser@synology.diskstation:/volume1/importantfiles An absolute path is required, otherwise you'll start seeing a write error: ERROR: module is read only When using DSM 5.1, there's also an issue with permissions to the rsync binary. Permission denied, please try again. Make sure rsync is enabled, go to Control Panel - File Services - rsync and tick "Enable rsync service". or explicitly defining the rsync path might help: /usr/bin/rsync --rsync-path=/usr/syno/bin/rsync -a -e /home/erik/importantfiles/ mynewuser@synology.diskstation:/volume1/importantfiles
