accept Windows update files. Third party software, service packs etc. will install, however any KBXXXXXX.msu file stops with the following error message: "Error : Installer encountered an error:0x80096001 error code 0x80096001 A System-level error occured while verifying trust" I have been researching this issue for several days and have tried all Microsoft provided fixit (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058), installing as a different administrator, recreating the SoftwareDistribution folder, restarting wuauserv, and re-registering .dll files. This is not a malware issue, these systems were recently reconfigured to comply with mandated standards. There has 80096001 windows 7 to be one or more registry settings or group policies which are causing this issue. The question is, which are causing this and how can it be fixed? These systems are standalone, they cannot connect to networks. Appreciate the assistance... It was infested with viruses so I wasn't surprised https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/38bc3b89-b53f-4924-9d0a-fc90832b5ccc/cause-and-fix-for-error-code-0x80096001?forum=w7itprosecurity that it was acting up on them. Using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and ComboFix I was able to successfully clean the system, but what do you do after the viruses have been removed and the system still isn't working right? They may be gone, but they already did their damage! The 80096001 Windows Update Problem After removing the viruses I wanted http://jbwebtech.net/fixing-windows-update-error-0x80096001/ to run a Windows Update to make sure it was all up-to-date. As soon as it came up though I knew there was a problem. It had the red shield there it had a message reading something like "You should run Windows Update regularly to keep the system updated." As soon as I clicked the "Check for Updates" button it came back with error 0x80096001, and a pop-up came on the screen reading "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I checked to make sure that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Windows Update services were both started, and they were. Consequently, I had also just downloaded and installed the Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus program, and although that installed without a problem, checking for definition updates manually also gave an error and wasn't able to complete. It was able to download a definition update automatically on its own though, but wouldn't work when clicking the "Update Now" button. Simple F

Hi Please try this: Open a command prompt (Start/Run --> cmd.exe) in the command prompt, run the following: net stop wuauserv cd /d %windir%\softwaredistribution del /s wu*.cab net start wuauserv Please let error number 0x80096001 us know if this solved the problem. -- torgeir, Microsoft MVP Scripting and WMI, Porsgrunn Norway Administration scripting examples and an ONLINE version of the 1328 page Scripting Guide: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/default.mspx Torgeir Bakken \(MVP\), Sep 30, 2004 #2 Advertisements James Guest I've also experienced the 0x80096001 error, and none of the suggested fixes (deleting wu*.cab, and registering some dll's) have helped, so I'm posting a small chunk of the WindowsUpdate.log file in the hopes that someone has an idea what's up. The computer I'm working on is a Windows ME machine that was updated to Windows XP Home, going back to the oldest Windows XP restore point (which might be one created very shortly after the sustem was upgraded to Windows XP) doesn't seem to help.
