The correct cause for this is that Extended Support expired for Windows 2000 on July 13, 2010, more than a year prior to the creation of this thread, and there are no more updates available for Windows 2000. 0x800C0002 is an Invalid_URL error and it's being caused because the Windows 2000 client is attempting to access a non-existent AU/WU site. Prior to June, 2012, it's possible that this could have been a manifestation of an older AU client and resolved by downloading and installing the current WUAgent (v7.4); however, since the entire WU infrastructure was updated to the WUAgent v7.6 in June, 2012, and obtaining that WUAgent update requires a system to be running a supported operating system ... today it is flat-out impossible to obtain patches for a Windows 2000 system unless you're using a downlevel/unpatched WSUS v3 or WSUS v2 system that can accept connection requests from a downlevel WUAgent.Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCITP:EA, MCDBA, MCSA SolarWinds Head Geek Microsoft MVP - Software Packaging, Deployment & Servicing (2005-2013) My MVP Profile: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/Lawrence.Garvin http://www.solarwinds.com/gotmicrosoft The views expressed on this post are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of SolarWinds.

Perhaps Microsoft has removed support for these servers. During initial visit to Windows Update, I get the prompt to update the updater, which I allow, then it dies. Firewall is wide open, and no AV, or other software installed on the server yet. Oddly enough, the automatic updates came down, I just can error number 0x800c0002 use the Windows Update site.
