This suggested theproblem was associated with the loaded version ofIE6. Installation notes buried in theIE6 upgrade folder, after installation(lookfor readme.txt inyour/Programs/Internet Explorer folder) suggest that if IE6 is already installed on an NT4 system, it should be un-installed before attempting to upgrade the system to Windows 20000,and then re-installed when the upgrade is completed. This absolutelymatchesthe upgrade scenario I was working from,after which I encountered the same problem described above - IE6 was already loaded onthe NT4 system, when Iupgraded to Windows 2000 Pro. Unfortunately, IE6 did not appear underAdd/Remove Programs, where I was hoping to find a "Repair" option. In the course of trying various approaches, I briefly re-activated Automatic updates, which I had disabledbecause locally saved update bundles were going to be used to reduce unnecessary internet traffic. Despite IE6 being loaded and running, Automatic Updates identified and proposed numerous updates for IE5.5, which was the previous version before IE6 was loaded. (incSP4) on my computer and it will not let me do updates. I go to update site, it installs Activex control, then it get an Error number: 0x800C0002 appearing in the top right hand corner. A simple Google search indicates that such an error is usually the result of ZoneAlarm or other 3rd-party security software.
