Figured this is more of a server management thing than coding...so here it is! :-) I've just begun to play with a test Windows server running IIS. This is completely for a friend and I to learn from. So, I really don't know jack yet. I have IIS up and running and my site is visible from the web. So, that much is good. Now I want to get php and MySQL going. I've found TONS of tutorials and walkthroughs on doing this, but most are very old and the new ones don't cover everything. Here's what I know I want from reading... Latest version of PHP running with FastCGI and then MySQL. All of this is running with IIS6. I've found tutorials for installing PHP with Fast CGI...and I've found tutorials for installing MySQL. I've also found tutorials for installing MySQL and PHP, but they're old and only install with ISAPI rather than FastCGI. Does anyone know of a good, comprehensive tutorial for later versions of php and MySQL with FastCGI? Or can someone help me write one to share with other ignorant folk like myself? :-D Thanks! John's Drupal Books Pro Drupal Development, Second Edition (and now Third Edition) IIS6.0, FastCGI Go Live, Windows Server 2003 Submitted by John on Tue, 2007-10-23 14:42 With all the hoopla about FastCGI on IIS I thought I'd give it a whirl. Here's what I did. Installed Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition. Selected Application Server role. This installs IIS 6. Setup autologin since this is a disposable virtual machine. Fought IE7's draconian security popups to download Firefox. Downloaded mysql-essential-5.0.45-win32.msi. Downloaded php-5.2.4-nts-Win32.zip. http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?222314-Installing-PHP-and-MySQL-on-IIS6 (This non-thread-safe version is recommended to use FastCGI). Extracted the contents to C:\php. Went to My Computer - Properties - Advanced - Environmental Variables and added ,C:\php to the PATH variable. Renamed php.ini-dist to php.ini. I used php.ini-dist since this is just a development box. In php.ini: - uncommented fastcgi.impersonate = 1 since I plan to run it with IIS. - set doc_root = http://www.sysarchitects.com/iis60-fastcgi-go-live-windows-server-2003 "C:\Inetpub" - set session.save_path = "C:\php\sessiondata" Opened port 80 in the firewall. I can now send a request to IIS and get back a response in my web browser. The response is an Under Construction page since I haven't set a default page in IIS yet. Made a index.htm file and said Hello World. Downloaded FastCGI Extension for IIS6.0. The End-User License Agreement includes this: "You may not disclose the results of any benchmark tests of the software to any third party without Microsoft's prior written approval". Thus you will not see any benchmarks from me. And this: "If you give feedback about the software to Microsoft, you give to Microsoft, without charge, the right to use, share and commercialize your feedback in any way and for any purpose." Thus you will not see any feedback about the Microsoft FastCGI Extension for IIS 5.1 and 6.0 Go Live software from me. Configured FastCGI according to these instructions. I have some php websites by external parties, that I'm trying to run in a test environment. One of the websites just plain gives me a FastCGI Error Page. This does not happen on every page, it just seems to happen error number 14001 on some pages, while others are displayed correctly. Question: Is there some way to enable logging somewhere so that I can get a bit more information on this problem? I have looked in Eventlog IIS Website log (c:\windows\system32\Logfiles) PHP log But no results, except the IIS Website log mentions a return of a 500 page. Question: Is there any other way to debug/check where things might be going wrong? Here is what the page looks like: FastCGI Error The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request. Error Details: The FastCGI process exited unexpectedly Error Number: -1073741571 (0xc00000fd). Error Description: Unknown Error HTTP Error 500 - Server Error. Internet Information Services (IIS) Answer Apparently, the error message means Stack Overflow, so debugging is the message. I'm not a PHP developer, so this was a pretty painful process. However we narrowed down the problem to an Ajax request, but I guess this could be happening with any sort of request: The request itself causes the server to return a 500. After trying out the request with Fiddler, we found that Cookie entry in the GET request contains a PHPSESSID item. When leaving this out, the request does work. So the answer to this problem (in our case) is leaving
