already in use by another application or another host. The error can occur if the Removable Storage service in Windows anr8779e error number 46 is enabled or if NTBackup is used. Other applications or drivers can also take control of tape devices and cause this problem. This error can also occur if the IBM device driver was

not installed with install_exclusive.exe. Resolving the problem There are a few reasons that can cause Windows to report a device to be busy. In the vast majority of cases, the problem is external to Tivoli Storage Manager and caused by the configuration, and such troubleshooting will need to be done outside Tivoli Storage Manager. Here are some common cases known to cause issues: 1. Ensure that the Windows anr8779e error number 79 "Removable Storage Service" is disabled. 2. Ensure that if an IBM device is used requiring the IBM Device Driver, that it is installed with install_exclusive.exe and running the latest release. With install_exclusive.exe, the driver will issue automatic reserves on open and also prevent multiple open handles from the host to a drive to exist at the same time. This is required by applications such as Tivoli Storage Manager. Full instructions on installing the IBM tape driver can be found in the Device Driver Install and User's Guide: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S7002972&aid=1 3. Check the SAN configuration. Item 1 and 2 are easy to solve, however most problems occur at the SAN layer. Here are some items on the SAN that will need to be verified: that the HBA firmware and driver is adequate for the drive used, consult the following technote to confirm: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21193154 ensure that the proper tape device driver is used ensure that the SAN fabric is zoned properly and that only Tivoli Storage Manager hosts are zoned to access the library and drives, consult the SAN administrator or vendor if necessary 4. In some rare occasions, it is possible that another application on the same machine could be accessing t

When trying to isolate the problem we found it was always related to SAN zoning changes or problems. Tape operations are very susceptible to SAN disruptions. Disk operations can survive it but not streaming backups. When such event occurs, stream is interrupted and backup fails - but there the problem begins. Seems there is an error in Windows driver for tape drives (layer below TSM or IBM driver) and in this situation SCSI reservations are not cleared on the drives. Then they are reported as busy and you get error 170 (this info I got from IBM - will try to find it and attach). Only thing we can do in such situation is to reboot the TSM server (machine, not the service) and sometimes the drive (library) as well. Unless we do, drives are not responding. What supports this theory is that non-windows storage agents/TSM servers do not need to be restarted. So for this particular server used for LANFree agents we are m

Have you checked the path to the tape drive Hows bout at the OS level - correct file names permissions? I see may have persistent binding enabled - hows bout a serial number conflict in the drive or path definitions. Last thing - look at the drive itself - is it online> can you access it from the library assistant -does the library assistant show any errors or maybe a stuck tape. sgabriel62, Dec 13, 2010 #2 mahmurth ADSM.ORG Member Joined: Mar 6, 2009 Messages: 52 Likes Received: 1 Hi, If you are getting this error frequently then it could be a communication issue. Can you check from the OS whether you have any hardware errors like tape drive failures or any adapter error. This could put some light on this issue. mahmurth, Dec 13, 2010 #3
