Both errored because it didn't like the service account. The one was due to the service account user looking like this username@domain.local rather than domain\username. The other was due to the service account getting changed via the services window rather than the sql configuration manager. If a sql service user is changed in services, it might not update the user in all of the appropriate places on the server. Hope this helps. I have applied SP3 and it went well on 1 instance, but the other instanse has only SP3 when it's online on one node. On the other node is has only SP2 on. there are MANY people with this particular problem--hint:Microsoft Pay Attention. Help! When installing SP2 for SQL Server 2005 I get this error message: MSI (s) (E0!68) [09:02:25:673]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) -- Error 29512. SQL Server http://www.bigresource.com/MS_SQL-Can-039-t-install-SQL-Server-2005-SP2-Error-29512-Unable-Add-User-To-Local-Group-LaVMfFxU.html Setup was unable add user OUR-LAN-DOMAINOUR-SERVICE-ACCOUNT to local group OUR-LAN-DOMAINSQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$OUR-DATABASE-SERVER-NAME$MSSQLSERVER. The error message seems to contradict itself: it says "local group" which seems to me to mean the group on the database server itself YET the group name is prefixed https://vox.veritas.com/t5/Backup-Exec/BE12D-Error-installing-SQL-agent/td-p/196432 with our LAN domain name. So which one is it? Also, I'm not sure if this message means there is a problem in Active Directory or in the security model of SQL Server itself. I don't think it means SQL error number Server itself because I don't think SQL Server has groups... it only has Roles, right? We looked in Active Directory and the user above does indeed exist in the domain-level group mentioned. Please help! It also tells me to review the SQL Express 2005 log file "Please review C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt for more details." Reviewing the first error got me nowhere, but the SQL log file is holds the key... "Error String : SQL Server Setup was unable add user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM to local group domain\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$servername$BKUPEXEC.Error Number : 29512" After searching for the error 29512 I found what the problem was. When I initially installed BE12D the server that it was installed on was a DC. So when SQL Express wanted to create local groups it couldn't. Instead it created domain groups. Well since then this server was demoted and is no longer
