I'm not sure why, but I'm getting the following error when I try to call the function: Uncaught TypeError: number is not a function The function, shipping, looks like this: function shipping( weight ) { var flat switch( weight ) { case 1: case 2: case 3: flat = 32.00; break; case 4: flat = 18.50; break; case 5: flat = 15.80; break; case 6: flat = 14.00; break;

The variable distance is coming from an ajax call that is completed before this function is run. That function looks like this: function get_distance( zip ) { $.getJSON( 'distance.php', { zip:zip }, function(json) { distance = json }) } // get_distance I've checked to make sure the variable distance is set. The console says the uncaught type error is happing at the line where I call shipping(1). Any thoughts as to why that's happening? javascript share|improve this question asked Jul 26 '10 at 4:02 hookedonwinter 6,089103966 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 22 down vote accepted Are you using shipping as a variable anywhere? Db Function Failed With Error Number 1054

Wouldn't it be useful to have a http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3332137/what-is-causing-the-error-uncaught-typeerror-number-is-not-a-function list where you could look to find out what they mean and how to fix them? Here you go! Below is a list of the strange errors in JavaScript. Different browsers can give you different messages for the same error, so there are several different examples where applicable. How to read errors? Before the list, let's quickly look at the structure of an https://davidwalsh.name/fix-javascript-errors error message. Understanding the structure helps understand the errors, and you'll have less trouble if you run into any errors not listed here. A typical error from Chrome looks like this: Uncaught TypeError: undefined is not a function The structure of the error is as follows: Uncaught TypeError: This part of the message is usually not very useful. Uncaught means the error was not caught in a catch statement, and TypeError is the error's name. undefined is not a function: This is the message part. With error messages, you have to read them very literally. For example in this case it literally means that the code attempted to use undefined like it was a function. Other webkit-based browsers, like Safari, give errors in a similar format to Chrome. Errors from Firefox are similar, but do not always include the first part, and recent versions of Internet Explorer also give simpler errors than Chrome - but in this case, simpler does not always mean better. Now onto the actual errors. Uncaught TypeError: undefined is not a function Related errors: number is not a function, object is not a function, st

"is not a function" mean?UpdateCancelAnswer Wiki10 Answers Philippe Lhoste, Coding JS (ES3) for a long time. Professionally (ES5+) a bit more recently.Written 59w agoAs said, you try to invoke a function, but what you call isn't a function.Example: let's define an object.var foo = { someValue: 10, theFunction: function() { alert('Foo'); } }Possible erroneous calls that raises this error (or another, like TypeError):- foo.someValue() -- well, that's not a function!- foo.tehFunction() -- bad spelling: foo.tehFunction is undefined- foo.doStuff() -- actually identical to the previous one: you thought this function existed, but it doesn't, so you get the error. JS coders often check for the existence of the function before calling it, if they are not sure it is here (eg. using an older browser or older version of a library): if (foo.doStuff) foo.doStuff(), sometime abbreviated as the more cryptic foo.doStuff && foo.doStuff() (to avoid, IMHO).To avoid the first error, you can check if the member is a function, with typeof, but it is often unneeded.9.1k Views · View UpvotesRelated QuestionsMore Answers BelowWhat causes JavaScript errors?What does the call function mean in JavaScript?JavaScript Frameworks: What are the expected trends in web design, or more specifically Javascript functionality, for 2015?What does this Javascript mean: "var connectHandler = function connected() {...}"?What is the meaning of "!function" and "use strict" in javascript functions? Mikhail Pushin, Senior SharePoint developerWritten 61w agoThis means that you try to invoke a function, but there is no such function in the object. Probably there is a field with this name, but not a function.For instance, you have an object Person, which has a function getName(), but you did a spelling mistake and try to invoke as Person.getNamme(). In such case you get this exception, because there is no function getNamme() in object Person.
