I realized that one of the customerrors mode= off parameter is a function to handle error that coming when the method throw an exception. I try method get_message() to get the error message. This work-well when I access it from localhost. But when I access the method from remote computer, the message is changed by a standard error: "There was an error processing the request". callws = function (args) { // call webservice to fill content panel Sys.Net.WebServiceProxy.invoke(_servicePath, _serviceMethod, false, { contextKey: args }, Function.createDelegate(this, onSubmitComplete), Function.createDelegate(this, onSubmitError), args); } onSubmitComplete = function (result, userContext, methodName) { ... } onSubmitError = function (result, userContext, methodName) { // note: this result.get_message() contain exception message when // accessed from localhost, but contain "There was an error processing the request" // when accessed from remote computer alert(result.get_message()); } c# javascript asp.net web-services error-handling share|improve this question asked Jan 16 '12 at 0:50 Ahmad Firdaus 364 What kind of web service are you hitting (WCF, ASMX)? –M.Bab

This http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13546429/how-to-get-exception-information-when-calling-json-web-service is because the web service would serialize the exception info in JSON. However, once I upgraded to .NET 4.5, this broke. Now, when I pass in an invalid username and password, I get the HTTP response: HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error Cache-Control: private Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8 Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5 jsonerror: true X-AspNet-Version: 4.0.30319 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET Date: Sat, 24 Nov 2012 22:42:33 GMT Content-Length: 91 {"Message":"There was an error processing the request.","StackTrace":"","ExceptionType":""} Basically, the exception type is lost and replaced with a generic error message. What caused this behavior to change, and is there still a way to return exception information in JSON? Pretty much my entire API is designed to rely on this behavior. c# asp.net .net web-services asp.net-ajax share|improve this question asked Nov 24 '12 at 22:46 Mike Christensen 44.4k18126230 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 6 down vote accepted Ah, this was a stupid issue.
