Collecting User-Mode Dumps Starting with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Error Reporting (WER) can be configured so that full user-mode dumps are collected and stored locally after a user-mode application crashes. Applications that do their own custom crash reporting, including .NET applications, are not supported by this feature. This feature is not enabled by default. Enabling the feature

Today, I will explain how you can configure this controversial Windows feature in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. I will also show how you can manage Windows Error Reporting with Group Policy. AboutLatest PostsMichael PietroforteMichael Pietroforte is the founder and editor of 4sysops. In the sidebar click "Change Action Center settings" and then click the "Problem reporting settings" link at the end of the Action Center applet. You can also start typing "problem reporting" in the Windows Start Menu search prompt and then click "Choose how to report problems."The four options appear to speak for themselves (see screenshot), but, I think, at least two of them are a bit misleading. The default setting is "Automatically check for solutions" and the second option is "Automatically check for solutions and send additional report data if needed." I guess most people believe that with the first setting no error reports are sent to Microsoft. However, when I checked my Problem Reports, I realized t

I tried the following: I followed the steps at MSDN "Collecting User-Mode Dumps": http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb787181%28v=vs.85%29.aspx Somewhere on the internet I saw a mention about WER registry keys for 32 bit apps do NOT have to be added under HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\ Also that the ..\Windows NT\AeDebug\Auto (REG_SZ) value must be "0" Additionally, I have WER error entries in the 'system event viewer' under "Windows Logs\Applications&Services\Microsoft\Windows\WER-Diagnostics\Operational" Showing messages "Possible heap corruption detected (code 3221225477)" I don't know if this message relates to my test-app creating a NPE, or if this is WER itself having a problem? I just can't get it to work :( Can anyone give me some clues ? Update : For another fresh 2008R2 x64 machine, i just did the HKLM\Software\... Reporting\LocalDumps\DumpFolder = "c:\crashdumps" HKLM\Software\... Reporting\LocalDumps\DumpType = 2 (REG_DWORD) HKLM\Software\... Reporting\LocalDumps\DumpCount = 20 decimal (REG_DWORD) And running the nulpointer-terster worked as expected. So im thinking there must be a settings in these other machines which prohibit LocalDumps from being used, although the LocalDumps registry-keys are there.. windows-server-2008 windbg windows-server-2008-r2 crash-dumps windows-error-reporting share|improve this question edited Oct 1 '14 at 13:21 Kiquenet 5,0672487148 ask
