working in Windows 7 A client of mine started having a strange problem when browsing pictures and videos on his Windows 7 PC: it would popup with the following error message: COM Surrogate has stopped working The odd thing was that the error only came up com surrogate has stopped working windows 7 when browsing video or picture files, not any other type of file. After doing some research, we
What Is Dllhost.exe Com Surrogate
managed to fix the problem, but had to try a couple of different things before it finally worked. In this post, I'll write out dllhost.exe virus the different possible solutions and hopefully one of them will work for you. Method 1 - Update Codecs Obviously since it was a video/picture problem, we thought it could be something with the current set of codecs installed. This client in http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/277865-how-fix-problem-dllhost-exe.html particular liked to copy and rip stuff, so he had ffdshow installed plus some other codecs. We manually updated all the codecs to their latest versions including ffdshow, Windows 7 Codec Pack and others. You can download the latest version of Windows 7 Codec Pack here. If you have DivX or Nero installed on your computer, go ahead and update those to the latest versions too. In some cases, you may have to uninstall a program and then reinstall it later http://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/fix-com-surrogate-has-stopped-working-in-windows-7/ on. Method 2 - Kaspersky Antivirus There has been a known issue with Kaspersky antivirus that cases this problem to occur. If you're using Kaspersky, you need to make sure you update the actual Kaspersky software, not just the antivirus definitions. You can also test to see if this is really causing the issue by disabling the program altogether and seeing if the issue goes away. Method 3 - Commands There are a few commands you can try to run in Windows to see if it fixes the problem. You have to run these in the command prompt. Click on Start, type cmd and then right-click and choose Run as Administrator. Now type in the following commands, pressing enter after each one: regsvr32 vbscript.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll That will re-register a few dlls with Windows and possibly fix the COM surrogate error. If not, keep reading! Method 4 - Check Disk for Errors If you're seeing this problem only on a particular drive like an external USB device, then it could be that there are some bad sectors on the hard drive. It's a good idea to run a chkdsk to make sure the drive is functioning properly. You can read my previous post on how to use the chkdsk utility. Method 5 - Disable DEP for dllhost.exe Another fix that has been mentioned numerous times is adding dllhost.exe to the exclusion list for DEP (Data Execution Protection). You can read my previous p
Leave a comment Many Windows (7, 8 and 10) users have reported experiencing as issue where they receive an error message stating "COM Surrogate has stopped working", while browsing folders https://appuals.com/com-surrogate-has-stopped-working-dllhost-exe/ containing video or media files. Some users have also reportedly received this error while trying to print. COM Surrogate is the executable host process (dllhost.exe) which runs in the background, while you are navigating through files and folders. Due to this process you are able to view thumbnails and when this process crashes, the error pop-ups up on the screen. This may also be caused by corrupt error windows codecs required to view the media. In this guide, we've listed some steps for you that will hopefully fix the issue. Method 1: Rollback to The Previous Display Adapter Driver To do this, Hold the Windows Key and Press R. In the run dialog, type hdwwiz.cpl and Click OK. Scroll to the Display Adapters section in the Device Manager. Right Click on it and select Properties. Click Roll dllhost.exe application error Back Driver and proceed with the instructions on screen. In some cases, this option is grayed out, if that is the case then attempt the Method's below. Method 2: Add dllhost.exe to the DEP Exception Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced System settings> Performance settings > Data Execution Prevention. Select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:" Click on "Add" and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\dllhost.exe on 32-bit Windows Machine and on a 64-bit machine, add C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dllhost.exe After Adding dllhost.exe to the exception list, Apply changes or click OK Method 3: Re-register the DLLs Run the following commands in an escalated command prompt. Click Start, type cmd ; right Click on the “cmd” program from the search results and select Run as Administrator. PRO TIP: If the issue is with your computer or a laptop/notebook you should try using the Reimage Plus Software which can scan the repositories and replace corrupt and missing files. This works in most cases, where the issue is originated due to a system corruption. You can download Reimage Plus by Clicking Here In the Command Prompt window, type the following Commands and press Enter key one by one: regsvr32 vbscript.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll Method 4:
