Since you did not say which fan this is, lets say its your processor cooling fan, if it fails, your processor could end up being fried, the price of a processor replacement is way more than the price of a cooling fan. Replace that fan ASAP. Bruce. Welcome to Bleeping Computer! Thread Status: Not open for further replies. Advertisement Keawolf Thread Starter Joined: Dec 4, 2010 Messages: 7 It's been about a year since we've used this computer, and last time we did, it ran perfectly. Now all of a sudden it pops a black screen, saying that there is a "Main fan error" and to check the fan. The first thing I did was http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/337938/02famain-fan-error-gateway/ clean out the fan. There was a small amount of dust in it, but nothing major. The fan turns on for five seconds on start up, then something turns it off. Things that I know so far, is the fan is NOT damaged, and the computer is NOT overheating in anyway. My father and I tested this by pulling out the memory chips. The fan runs continuously https://forums.techguy.org/threads/main-fan-error-m-series-gateway-notebook.966411/ without stopping when the chips are removed. Also the air coming from the vent is not warm, and I can touch the fan itself and it is not even warm. My father and I believe there is something wrong with the sensor that says whether or not the fan is running. Possibly a heat sensor of some kind. What we need to know is if there is a way to find where the sensor is at, and if there is a way to repair it. The warranty of this computer has expired, so please don't suggest taking it back, or just buying a new computer. Any information about this issue would be greatly appreciated. If so, did you install the motherboard chipset drivers? http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn¶m=1015670R I ask because the fan on my son's Gateway laptop didn't run after he downgraded it fro
