some days and beeping with Fan error popping on the top left corner right after the POST screen leading the tpfancontrol pc to shut down after some time.My model of Lenovo T60 notebook has hardware specification with 14.1-inch display, equipped with a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo T2400 (4M Cache, 800 MHz FSB) Centrino (Merom) processor, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y00nqbqCMqw 2 x 2GBDDR1667MHz (PC-5300) memory, Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 and a 320GB (5400rpm) hard drive. This machine doesn't have the biometrics scanner as in Lenovo ThinkPad T61. Picture 1 Lenovo ThinkPad T60 So when I got the "fan error" on the screen as shown below, I researched about it on the web to find out that this does happen when the machine is overheating, on top of http://how2do-urself.blogspot.com/2014/01/ibm-thinkpad-t60-fan-error.html that the dust plays equal role to bring the fan down to create noise out of it. However, I have also read Lenovo machine's fan is not lubricated during its manufacture. Therefore, accumulation of dust on fan creates noise while spinning with full speed. Now to solve this kind of error, I was just bypassing it by pressing ESC key at first, which I did several whenever I switched ON the notebook. But then the cooling fan noise irritated me also I have found out that if the fan completely stops working it would have to order new one and replace it. So I had better idea of cleaning this CPU fan and lubricating it instead. Besides, I was aware that if the fan doesn't even work at all it's going to wear out the CPU inside because of the over heat. Finally I got on to the work of disassembling T60 which can be shown below. Picture 2 Keyboard Faced. Picture 3 Removing Hand rest cover. I opened it and finally the cooling fan was visible with lots of dust on. Had to take out the fan module out of the machine to clean out the dust. Picture 4 Du

I'd been having some problems with my four-year-old T60 (2613EBU) overheating and freezing without warning, and after some searching and reading I suspected that I just needed to clean out my fan. (Note: it's been out of warranty for three years, so I figured I'd just fix it myself.) I followed the manual carefully and took out the fan and removed a fair amount of dust which was indeed blocking some air flow. Since I took out the fan unit I had to clean off and reapply thermal paste on the CPU, which I did, and carefully put everything back together. Now, the problem: when I boot up, it displays the Thinkpad splash screen and asks for my fingerprint, but after it recognizes my finger it hesitates for a few seconds and just displays "Fan error" on the screen, then turns off. I did some more searching to find the specific cause of this error, and found that one possibility was the way I applied the thermal paste, which was admittedly a tiny bit sloppy. I took it all apart again, cleaned off the old paste, and spread a new layer as thin and evenly as I could. After putting everything back, the exact same error occurred.I've been thinking about it, and these are the root causes I can think of:1) The manual warned to be very careful handling the fan assembly, which I was, but there is a chance I damaged it without realizing. In this case I have no choice but to buy a new fan.2) Thermal paste problems again? I could once again reapply, or get better paste? Mine is rather thick and paste-y, so I couldn't get as super-thin a layer as might be possible, but I don't know if that's an issue.3) While in there, I bumped something else without realizing to cause this error. In this case, I'm pretty much SOL.Is there something I'm missing? What's the most likely culprit?Thanks!-Abram Top Profile Reply with quote Harryc Post subject: Re: T60 Fan Error after cleaning my fan... did I break it?PostPosted: Wed Aug 25, 2010 9:25 am Offline Moderator Emeritus Joined: Thu Apr 12, 2007 8:23 am Posts: 13228 Location: Upstate New York Did you plug the fans power lead back into the systemboard?
