What next?PostPosted: Wed Oct 15, 2008 8:44 am Offline Joined: Tue Oct 14, 2008 9:45 pm Posts: 5 Location: Frederick, MD Hello - I have a 4 year old T42. I love fan error the laptop and don't want to give it up yet. I recently replaced the Li-ion battery, and otherwise this thing has been a tank. Just last week, I started to get a "Fan Error" right after boot. At first it was intermittent, and I could reboot and get a successful boot. But now it happens every time I turn the computer on. Sometimes, if fan error t42 the computer has been off for a while, I can get it to boot. If I see the error at boot, the laptop shuts down a few seconds after showing that error. I took the laptop apart and there was no obvious build-up of dust in the fan. I blew it out anyway, then spun the fan with my fingers and the action seemed smooth and normal. Also, when I boot the computer, I notice the fan is still blowing air and there is noticeable increase in fan noise from when it was new. The fan seems to be working fine except for the error message. What should I do to resolve this? What fan do I need for a 2379 T42? Should I try reseating this current fan with additional thermal grease first, before buying a replacement fan? Thank you for any suggestions! _________________Former UNIX Systems Administrator, enjoying a new creative outlet as a photographer. T42 w/ 2GB RAM and 15" 1400x1050 screen. ProductsHomearound the homeproductivityHow to Fix an IBM ThinkPad Fan ErrorHow to Fix an IBM ThinkPad Fan ErrorBy Richard KalinowskiIf your IBM ThinkPad laptop turns black and displays "fan error," this means your CPU fan malfunctioned. To fix the fan error, you must address the underlying cause. You can't just reboot the system and hope for the best. You must take this problem very seriously. Without a functioning fan, your computer's processor could overheat and become damaged in a matter of minutes. Fortunately, with some proactive fan cleaning, you can get the fan working again, resolving the error message and any potential processor damage.Things You'll NeedCompressed airRubbing alcoholCotton swabsStep 1Turn off your IBM ThinkPad.Step 2Unplug your ThinkPad from the wall outlet. Remove the battery from the laptop.Step 3Tilt the ThinkPad so you can see its left edge clearly. You will notice a series of small vents. These vents are used for CPU fan exhaust.Step 4Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol.Step 5Swab away any external dust or dirt from the fan vents. Avoid pushing the cotton swab completely through the vents. Over time, a ThinkPad's fan vents can accumulate a lot of debris that is difficult to remove without an alcohol-based cleanser.Step 6Blow compressed air into the vents to remove any remaining dust or blockage. Sometimes the fan stops working simply because of accumulated dusty buildup.Step 7Plug in your ThinkPad, reattach the battery and boot up the system. If the fan is still not working, your computer will be unable to boot, displaying yet another "fan error" message. If the fan is not clogged, the fan error is due to fan assembly malfunction. According to Inside My Laptop, you will need to replace the entire fan assembly.Tips & WarningsIt's best to have a professional replace your fan assembly, as it requires removing the keyboard and accessing the computer's motherboard. The motherboard is the lifeblood of your computer; if you accidentally damage any microchips, circuits or wires connected to the motherboard, you can destroy the entire computer.References & ResourcesInside My Laptop: IBM ThinkPad Laptop Displays Fan Error Message on BootupRelatedGrandpa Needs a New Cell PhoneProductivityWaterproof Your Tech: Stay Dry, My FriendsProductivity5 Signs That Your Family Needs New PhonesProductivityHow Do I Scan From My HP Printer to My PC?ProductivityHow to Get Solar Panels For Your Home (For Free)ProductivityHOW WE SCOREABOUT USCONTACT USTERMS OF USEPRIVACY POLICY©2016 Dema
