By following your suggestion below about putting the /B back on the XWin start line in startxwin.bat (BTW, /B is not present on that line in the distribution), I was able to observe the following in the launching shell window: ___________________________________________________________________ C:\>startxwin _XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root winDetectSupportedEngines () - Windows NT/2000 winDetectSupportedEngines () - DirectDraw installed winDetectSupportedEngines () - Allowing PrimaryDD winDetectSupportedEngines () - DirectDraw4 installed winDetectSupportedEngines () - Returning, supported engines 0000000f winSetEngine () - Using Shadow DirectDraw NonLocking winCreateBoundingWindowWindowed () - WindowClient width 1018 height 742 winInitVisualsShadowDDNL () - Masks 0000f800 000007e0 0000001f RGB 6 d 16 winInitVisualsShadowDDNL () - Returning error opening security policy file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed' ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server "192.168.152.99:0.0" XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server "192.168.152.99:0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. ------------------------------------------

Looking at the log file, it appears that this is the pertinent error message: Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed' winDeinitClipboard - Noting shutdown in progress winDeinitMultiWindowWM - Noting shutdown in progress Any https://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree/2001-q2/msg01132.html ideas? Now, at my workstation, (both are NT 4 fatal io SP6a, one Server, one WS), I cannot start. I think I have nearly the same components installed, I don't see differences, the devil knows what is the reason. All my mounts are binmode, I used the Xinstall.sh script to install.
