But I will still need the dummy's guide to doing it.But basically what my problem is, I installed CentOS 5.5 GNOME 64bit onto my VPS server, but when I reboot my server and then attempt to reconnect via RealVNC (VNC Viewer Software) if I type in :1 at the end which is usually my GNOME desktop, it comes up with a black screen for the background, with a black "X" with a white outline as the mouse.I've figured that there is a command I need to enter to get GNOME to run again after startup, the last time I asked my VPS Provider to fix it for me, but I don't want to be having to wait 10 hours everytime I reboot my server to be able to access it again, and I asked them to tell me how to get it working, and they didn't say. So i've turned to you guys here.I understand about using Putty to connect via SSH, and I understand the basic use of it, but as far as technical jargon goes you'll confuse me. If it runs, you can connect on your server via variety of VNC clients from any other computer. There are two ways how to achieve it:1. connect via putty (yo u said you know) and then simply type: "vncserver"it will ask you about the password you want to set thats all - untill the server reboot your vnc service will run on the serverAlso, from your post, it looks like your server has open VNC service ports to connect to from outside - this is could be security issue -> point 3. i stated below .... 2. you can configure your vnc service to start automatically on the server, so that you dont have to start it manually after rebootguide here:http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/VNC-Server3. just option - you can 'tunnel' to your vnc service on server via ssh (putty) and then you can run it as usuall, but! the connection is SSH encrypted and safe (as far as it goes) from any
