I've never used a Linux system before; now I'm experiencing dificulties installing Debian 3.0r0 using the 2.4 kernel. I intended to use the 2.4 kernel, because I have a Logitech USB-mouse (optical) and a SB Audigy soundcard. Since I read USB-support was better with the 2.4 kernel this seemed a logical choice. However, when the X server is started the screen flickers a few times, after which it generates the following error-message: "Fatal server error: failed to initialize core devices" I know very little about t

Quote Postby swggy » 2007/05/03 23:24:48 I've seen this problem in a number of places around the linux forums, but noone seems to have the answer displayed. Now I've got the problem, and (as a true-blue newbie) I have no idea how to correct the situation. Perhaps it's so simple that I just need a dope-smack...(BTW, I had KDE installed and running at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/x-won't-start-fatal-server-error-failed-to-initialize-core-devices-27629/ one point, so I'm thinking the hardware's fine. My guess is that, because Trixbox is a server, the presumption was that the desktop files wouldn't be needed - although I don't see why yum install would care about that. Over the past 2 weeks I've followed a number of tutorials, one of which probably set something up to allow KDE to start, but I can't find that tutorial http://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=35603 now - and I'm sure I printed everything out before walking through it. Then my internet crashed because I trusted yet another tutorial, so I thought I'd try GNOME, but that failed for a reason I'm trying to chase down in another thread - and it failed earlier in the process, so I'll probably still need the answer to this issue regardless. Long story short (too late!), this is still a problem for me...)I've installed from the Trixbox 2.0 iso, and gone through the following (history list):Code: Select all11 yum grouplist
12 yum groupinstall "X Window System" "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
13 yum update
14 reboot
15 mouseconfig
16 startx... and according to all I read, the thing should come right up...but it doesn't. Here's what shows up after the screen blanks and comes back:Code: Select alllogin as: root

Aug 2008, 20:16 Does anyone have a clue why Virtual Box is https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?p=33221 not letting me startx my RHEL box? I'm running version 4 (ES) of Red Hat, and while the system was loaded with all the "Addons" for a Linux guest, I am not able to run "startx" to initiate the GUI. It looks like there are issues with the mouse. Ironically, Windows guests work flawlessly... xancatal Posts: 32Joined: 8. Aug 2008, 21:21Location: USA Top Reply with quote by Sasquatch » 18. Aug 2008, 20:02 Sasquatch, The poll makes sense, being that installing Windows guest systems is easier in my short experience with vritualbox than installing them on Linux or Solaris. Are you willing to help, or simply criticize my poll? I don't know what do you mean by "conform to forum posting guide". The virtual box is running on Solaris 10 05/08 x64, 1 AMD Opteron CPU, and 1GB of Ram. Running Virtualbox 1.6.4. xancatal Posts: 32Joined: 8. Aug 2008, 21:07 Just read the Forum Posting Guide and give us more info as to what doesn't work, what errors, what settings, etc. The question about your poll is that you are having problems with Xserver on your RHEL guest, does that have anything to do with installing a specific Guest? If you look more closely here on the forums, you see that there are
