Does this error show up on other machines too when trying to install? If so, it could be that your installation disc is damaged or corrupted. If not, it could be that your hard disk is damaged or that the memory isn't working properly anymore. If this is the case, scan your hard disk and memory for errors. You give too little information to be of more service. Please check the above and let us know the outcome.
 jaclaz 694 The Finder 694 17,504 posts July 23, 2004 OS: none specified Country: Posted February 25, 2008 (edited) There are some paths and filenames ENCODED inside SETUPLDR.BIN.Tipically:\I386\ on CD's\minint\ on HD like devices (with the /minint switch\$WIN_NT$.~BT\ for pre-installation files on HD like devices\CMDCONS\ for Recovery ConsoleIf your CD searches for anything inside \$WIN_NT$.~BT\ instead of \I386\ some file is missing or the build procedure is wrong

I'm trying to help a friend with a computer problem. When the computer is powered on, it eventually results in a black screen with the cursor flashing http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/i386biosinfoinf-could-not-be-loaded/198600.html in the left-hand corner. I tried inserting a XP boot disk and powered on the computer. I got the following message: "File \i386\biosinfo.inf could not be loaded; error code 4096, cannot continue setup, press any key to exit." After pressing any key, it file i386 goes to the black screen with the cursor flashing in the left-hand corner. You can press F2 during the bootup to get Run Setup or F11 for the Boot Menu, but those don't seem to get me anywhere like a DOS screen or anything. Any ideas on how to fix this would be much appreciated! KCBUDYZR View Public Profile Find all posts by KCBUDYZR #2 October 31st, 2011, 08:22 PM MaDef CTH Subscriber Join Date: Dec 2000 Location: So. Cal Posts: 3,838 That file i386 biosinfo error indicates a bad or corrupt harddrive. Better list complete system specs. (if it's a retail pc, post make and model number). Does the pc list the installed hard drive onscreen during post? If not, you'll need to check the bios. When you power on the pc press F2 and Run Setup. this will get you into the bios, look for any entries like SATA, IDE, Primary disk, etc. next to one or more of those entries, there should be a model number for the disks connected to the system. That tells you 2 things. 1. the drive is being seen by the bios. 2. make and model of the disk. Use the model number to find out who makes the disk and download their disk utilities and test the drive. (they all have bootable iso images so you can boot from a cd/flash/floppy and run the utilities from it.) If the drive isn't listed in the bios, then the problem could be one of the following: 1. Completely dead drive 2. bad data cable to the mainboard (motherboard) 3. Bad Sata channel or IDE channel. 4. No power to the drive.
