I've ftp error configured my router and firewall properly and ftptest.net indicates the router/firewall are indeed configured properly. I have a third-party FTP / Filesync program that uses the FileZilla server. From the FileZilla server log, here is a common sequence of FTP commands executed by the third-party software as seen in the FileZilla server log:> PASV> ftp error 421 227 Entering Passive Mode (173,14,235,227,197,139)> MLSD /R-Disk/folder1/folder2/TD Ameritrade/Distributions> 150 Connection accepted> 226 Transfer OKI see this sequence (above) executed successfully literally thousands of times. However, every now and then I see this:> PASV> 227 Entering Passive Mode (173,14,235,227,197,140)> 421 No-transfer-time exceeded. Closing control connection.> disconnected.Either the third-party software is failing to send the MLSD command, or somehow the Filezilla Server is dropping the MLSD command, or my router / firewall is randomly blocking the MLSD command. I truly don't know where the problem is at this point. Is there any known problem with router's and firewalls where a sequence of FTP command will get through OK hundreds and thousands of times but then a router or firewall will stop one out of a thousand? Is there any known issue with FileZilla server that would cause what I'm seeing?Regards,Jeff Top Profile Reply with quote boco Post subject: Re: FileZilla Server Error: "421 No-transfer-time exceeded"PostPosted: 2012-10-02 21:57 Offline Contributor

It seems that once I successfully login into a server is get the following after running a command such as "ls" (I've enclosed the error portion in the "[ERROR]" tags): allen92@allen92-VirtualBox:~/Videos$ ftp -n ftp.FreeBSD.org Connected to ftp.FreeBSD.org. 220 beastie.tdk.net FTP server (Version 6.00LS) ready. ftp> user (username) anonymous 331 Guest login ok, send your email address as password. Password: 230 Guest login ok, access restrictions apply. Remote system type is UNIX. Using binary mode to transfer files. ftp> ls [ERROR] 421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection [ERROR] ftp> This seems to happen on any remote FTP server. Everything works fine when I login onto the local machine and run FTP commands. If in fact the "421" error is a generic error, is there any way to find out the source of the problem? Any leads on this would be appreciated. I haven't been able to find any support on this particular issue. Anybody with an similar problem please share your thoughts. NOTE: I have VSFTPD installed. ftp share|improve this question edited Apr 27 at 18:30 Anthon 47.3k1462125 asked Sep 13 '13 at 8:45 AllenD 3723612 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 7 down vote accepted There is most likely a NAT-firewall between you and the servers showing the symptom. (NAT-firewalls hide a whole network behind a single IP-number). The problem is that ftp wants to send the data resulting from the command in a new, separate TCP/IP connection and that cannot go through the firewall because it needs to go from the server to you, and you are hidden behind the firewall.
