What I did was that I first installed Win7 Rc and then I installed Arch with Legacy IDE option. Grub https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=81120 was installed to MBR. After installation I had to change some device names, but at http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/red-hat-fedora-linux/162056-solved-grub-error-21-a.html least now it works!! Thank you all! UPDATE #2:The issue was completely resolved by simply updating BIOS.So, yesterday I was playing around & studying with Openbsd install disk and I think I accidentally wiped all m data. So what, it happens . However, I run into some problems with reinstalling Arch. I installed as usual with USB stick loaded with grub loading 2009.08 x86_64 image. After rebooting I got to Grub, and it reports error 21. Weird, I'm sure my configuration is the way it was before The Great Mistake.I tried reinstalling Grub, no go. I even tried reinstalling with 2008.06 cd and with Ubuntu 8.04 cd, no go. Still the same error. Only thing I've got to boot from the HDD is Windows 7, but who wants that?! I get no error when installing Grub, and find grub loading error /boot/grub/stage1 in Grub shell finds stage1 file in (hd0,0). Also booting "Existing installation" with Arch Live cd/usb doesn't work.My /boot/grub/menu.lst:title Arch Linux root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/grub/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 ro initrd /boot/kernel26.imgOutput of fdisk -p /dev/sda (sorry, a bit messy text)/dev/sda1 * 1 3647 29294496 83 Linux /dev/sda2 3648 27963 195318270 5 Extended /dev/sda5 3648 27841 194338273+ 83 Linux /dev/sda6 27842 27963 979933+ 83 LinuxI'm all out of ideas at this point. Is the MBR somewhat corrupted? And how would I fix that? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks. Now I can get to the grub shell when booting from HDD, however, it cannot find hd0 or any disks at al

Now when I boot my laptop (external HDD removed), I get this: Code: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, please wait... Error 21 I don't get this. I never touched anything with my internal drive. Well, maybe. When I was reviewing what partitions the installer was going to format, the swap partition for my internal drive (Fedora) was set to be formatted even though I did not specify this. I figured that wouldn't cause any problems. Also, Fedora never used to show GRUB loading at all. Screen was blank until Fedora starting loading. Maybe this means that this is a copy of GRUB from my BackTrack disc? Also, I ran 'fdisk' to look for anything suspicious and under /dev/sda1 (internal drive, boot partition) it says "Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary." Please, please help. I have a half-completed research paper on this drive and LOTS of homework and about 70 O'Rielly books. 03-27-2010 #2 devils casper View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message View Articles Super Moderator Join Date Jun 2006 Location Chandigarh, India Posts 24,776 Installer of Backtrack has installed its GRUB in MBR of Internal disk.
