Hi ... I'm new to Puppy and pretty much to Linux as well, so please forgive ... I've completed a new installation of Puppy 4 on an old 700mhz laptop with a 40Gb HD and 256Mb ram. I followed the instructions here: http://www.puppylinux.org/manuals/puppy-40/english/how-install-puppy/full-installation The exception from the example given in the instructions was that I used hda1 as it was the only choice presented to me. On rebooting, expecting to see GRUB coming up and allowing me to boot from the HD, I got an error (which I didn't take a record of at the time, but it basically told me that GRUB could continue - presented on a black screen.) So I scratched my head and thought of re-running the Live CD and re-running grubconfig. I did this and it seemed to go okay, where I chose /dev/hda1 as the destination, and also took the MBR option. On re-booting again, I find now that I'm presented with a GRUB menu showing three options: boot from Linux on /dev/hda1 Install GRUB on a floppy (which I don't have or want) Install GRUB on the Linux partition /dev/hda1 Choosing just to boot from /dev/hda1 gets me the GRUB error 15 Choosing to re-install to /dev/hda1 seems to go okay, but gets me back to the same menu, where again, choosing to boot from /dev/hda1 gets me GRUB error 15 I seem to have followed what I could understand to do, but I now seem to be g

As described here, I ran the universal installer and chose Harddisk, Then i create a small partition with gparted (ext3, 1GB) and Puppy copied all the needed files from the Live-CD to the directory. In my case this was /tmp/boot/... After that Puppy asks me to modify Grub menu.lst. Since I couldn't find it, I started installing by opening http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/34535/puppy-frugal-install-harddisk-grub-problem "grub config" program through the menu. All went smooth and I was asked to put the path where to install, and I used /dev/sda1 since it's my hard drive. After restarting i come to the grub boot manager where chosing Linux (on dev/sda1) results in Error 15: File not found. Is this path "TMP/boot/..." somehow wrong (Puppy 5.2 did put it there automatically)? Why is this happening? grub share|improve this question edited Mar 19 '12 at 18:30 Renan 12.3k64365 asked Mar 19 '12 at 17:37 Email 1235 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote accepted Here are foolproof instructions to get it running http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxVOH3mo3Gw share|improve this answer answered Mar 20 '12 at 1:25 Email 1235 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. So I reinstalled it and now I get the following error message on bootup: Code: root (hd0,2) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda4 ro Error 15: File not found Press any key to continue... I did a few searches on google and can not find out what the problem is. Do you guys have any idea how I can fix this? I don't run Arch so I don't know if it uses Legacy Grub or Grub2 or I would also recommend posting the contents of grub legacy /boot/grub/menu.lst or for Grub 2 it is /etc/grub.d Any Live c

You can probably guess the subject matter here, before I even ask it. Yes, you guessed it.....I can't get SliTaz to boot. (Wonder why THAT is..? *a-hem*) I've been messing around with these things ever since quitting school, in the late 70's. I've probably used just about everything going over the years; DOS, Windoze, BSD, etc...and since April last year, when XP passed its sell by date, Linux. Started off with the 'buntus. Did a spell of distro-hopping; Fedora, Arch, Zorin (even attempted Gentoo...yuk!)...Debian, OpenSuse, PCLinux OS...you name it, I've tried it. Always kept Ubuntu on the hard drive, though. Then, in October last year, I discovered the Puppies. Whooo; what FUN! I've probably tried over 30 of the Pups; like I said, I like 'em. Even though my old Compaq desktop is now over 10 yrs old, they FLY on it. Mind you, I have done a lot of upgrading over the years... I've now gone 'all Puppy'. Tahrpup, Slacko 570, and ChromeBook Pup (v.2) are currently in my 'kennel' :) Anyway, I've now developed an interest in the 'micro-distros'. Tried DSL; antiX: Tiny Core, and Feather, so far. I've heard a lot of mentions of SliTaz, so I thought, 'Let's give it a try...' The Live CD works beautifully. Installation is a breeze. BUT: trying to get the damn thing to boot...it's nigh impossible. The Puppies use Grub4DOS; I've yet to find anything it can't boot. Er, should that be 'thought I'd yet to find'? I've tried this on & off over the last few months.....but each time I've just been defeated. I confess, I've never seen a boot setup QUITE like it. Why IS that? With barely a year under my belt, I'm not exactly 'comfy' in the terminal yet. I'm not that happy with editing GRUB, either ; mainly 'cos I still don't really understand what's going on. At the moment, I have Pups in sda's 1, 2 & 3. An extended partition, with 2 'logicals'; swap at the end, and Slitaz 4.0 in sda6. I know it's there (I can see everything in Puppy's 'Rox-Filer' (Puppy runs as root all the time.)) **SEE BELOW** Can someone explain to an old codger what I need to add to sd
