On this page How To Install GRUB 2 On Ubuntu 9.04 Upgrading To GRUB 2 Links How To Install GRUB 2 On Ubuntu 9.04 Version 1.0 Author: Falko Timme Follow me on Twitter This tutorial shows how you can upgrade your GRUB bootloader to GRUB 2 on Ubuntu 9.04. GRUB 2 has been rewritten from scratch to clean up everything for modularity and portability. GRUB 2 targets at the following goals: Scripting support, such as conditionals, loops, variables and functions. Graphical interface. Dynamic loading of modules in order to extend itself at the run time rather than at the build time. Portability for various architectures. Internationalization. This includes support for non-ASCII character code, message catalogs like gettext, fonts, graphics console, and so on. Real memory management, to make GNU GRUB more extensible. Modular, hierarchical, object-oriented framework for file systems, files, devices, drives, terminals, commands, partition tables and OS loaders. Cross-platform installation which allows for installing GRUB from a different architecture. Rescue mode saves unbootable cases. Stage 1.5 was eliminated. Fix design mistakes in GRUB Legacy, which could not be solved for backward-compatibility, such as the way of numbering partitions. I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you! Upgrading To GRUB 2 Open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal)... ... and start the upgrade as follows: sudo aptitude install grub-pc You will see the following questions: Chainload from menu.lst? <-- Yes Linux command line: <-- ENTER Afterwards reboot the system: sudo reboot At the beginning of the boot process, you will most likely see this error - press a key to continue: Select Chainload into GRUB 2 and press e: Select the root entry and press e: Now replace the string root... ... with the string uuid and press ENTER: Select the

A while ago, after no updates/changes that I was aware of, my system stopped booting, and gave me: Code: GRUB Loading stage1_5 GRUB Loading, please wait Error 15 The error is in stage 1.5, not stage2, as there is no more info on screen. However, the grub manual http://forums.justlinux.com/showthread.php?154371-Grub-Error-15-(SOLVED) tells us that stage 1.5 errors have the same explanations as stage2, and error 15 is "File not found". Presumably, Grub couldn't find stage2. However, after booting with a Grub CD, a quick check shows that the stage2 and all other stuff normally present is there. Furthermore, boot_info_script says all is hunky-dory, Code: Grub Legacy (v0.97) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #1 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst. Grub Legacy (v0.97) is installed in the boot sector of sda1 and looks at sector 17179431 of the same hard drive for the stage2 file. A stage2 file is at this location on /dev/sda. Stage2 looks on partition #1 for /boot/grub/menu.lst. Checked that menu.lst and fstab were ok. Furthermore, using the Grub CD I could boot sda1 by using the chainloader +1 command, and using the configfile command brought up the sda1 menu screen in all its multiple-choice glory. So presumably something is corrupt in the MBR. Easily fixed, I thought, just start up with the Grub CD, and enter Code: root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) Grub happily executed this, reported no errors. Only problem, the system still wouldn't boot normally. Re-installed Grub using apt-get, and ran grub-install. Not fixed. Perhaps sda1 has a corrupted filesystem? Ran e2fsck

Grub error 17 is kind of scary because you don't even see your grub menu in this case and grub error 15 is very frustrating because it shows the grub menu but comes back to same error over and over again. I was also terrified of these error because once you get these error you can't use your system, you can't access the net and that's is just not cool.is it ? The reason for grub error 17 is a messed up partition table disk order. How partition table disk order gets messed up I have no idea but it does sometimes and then you get error 17. So what does it mean by a messed up partition table disk order. It means say your drive A was /dev/hda2 earlier now it is /dev/hda3 or something else bottom line for you to know is that you need to fix this to get rid of error 17. A good way to find this out is using a live CD $ sudo fdisk -l You ‘ll get something like (this is only an example) Disk /dev/hda: 200.0 GB, 200049647616 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 24321 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x247ae615 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 *
