I am dual-booting between Ubuntu and Vista from a 2yr-old TOSHIBA grub loading stage 1.5 error 15 laptop. The version of Ubuntu I was using is 9.10 (ok, should have updated a while back, mea culpa...) Yesterday I couldn't load Ubuntu and I got a message Code: ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[long number] done not exist. Dropping to a shell! I managed to sort out the problem thanks to this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1355385 and used Ubuntu without any problem. Now today I tried to switch the computer on again and I am getting the error message Code: GRUB loading stage 1.5 GRUB loading, please wait... Error 15 Following the advice on the post above, I updated GRUB to GRUB2 last night. Maybe I shouldn't have... The screen with the GRUB error message comes before the screen that would let me choose between Vista and Ubuntu and won't let me use a command prompt or anything. The only thing I seem to be able to access is if I press F2 at start up which takes me to the Setup utility screen or F12 which takes me to the Boot Manager. Any help would be appreciated as, in effect, my computer is useless as it is now... A while ago, after no updates/changes that I was aware of, my system stopped booting, and gave me: Code: GRUB http://forums.justlinux.com/showthread.php?154371-Grub-Error-15-(SOLVED) Loading stage1_5 GRUB Loading, please wait Error 15 The error is in stage 1.5, not stage2, as there is no more info on screen. However, the grub manual tells us that stage 1.5 errors have the same explanations as stage2, and error 15 is "File not found". Presumably, Grub couldn't find stage2. However, after booting with a Grub CD, a quick check shows that the stage2 and all other stuff normally present is there. Furthermore, boot_info_script says all is hunky-dory, Code: Grub Legacy (v0.97) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #1 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst. Grub Legacy (v0.97) is installed in the boot sector of sda1 and looks at sector 17179431 of the same hard drive for the stage2 file. A stage2 file is at this location on /dev/sda. Stage2 looks on partition #1 for /boot/grub/menu.lst. Checked that menu.lst and fstab were ok. Furthermore, using the Grub CD I could boot sda1 by using the chainloader +1 command, and using the configfile command brought up the sda1 menu screen in all its multiple-choice glory. So pr

I'm running this existing distro (Ubuntu) from /dev/sdb with a new OS, Gentoo, installed on /dev/sda. I'm glad I took the trouble of setting these up on different disks because I can't boot into the new OS. All I get is grub error 15 "File not found". It also gives the UUID which I have verified is correct: sudo blkid /dev/sda1: LABEL="boot" UUID="b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5" TYPE="ext2" /dev/sda2: UUID="fc34999a-e85d-4c7b-8775-30510eb4c396" TYPE="swap" /dev/sda3: LABEL="main" UUID="65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd" TYPE="ext4" The menu.lst (on /dev/sdb) for the new OS is title Gentoo Linux 3.10.7-r1 uuid b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5 #root (hd0,0) kernel /kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd I also tried kernel /boot/kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd but since the UUID goes directly to the boot partition I think this is wrong. The kernel should be correct; if I mount dev/sda1 and ls I see grub kernel-3.10.7-gentoo Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? It might be very basic; I've only been using Linux for a few years and never Gentoo except for a few days in a chroot. I should mention I also have grub2 installed on dev/sda1 though I don't get as far there: it just shows the grub 'command line'. ubuntu grub2 gentoo grub-legacy share|improv
