Environment SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2 Situation After an online update grub fails with:Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition Resolution Solution: For systems running SLES11SP1 or immediate action to get the system back online please see the workaround below. On systems running SLES11SP2 update perl-Bootloader to version 0.4.89.44-0.4.2.1 or later. Workaround:Press enter to get back into the grub menu, press "e" on the default boot entry (usually the first in the list), select the line root (hd0) and press "e" again. Change root (hd0) to the desired value (e.g. if the root device is /dev/sda1, the location would be hd0,0) and press enter. Check the changes on the screen for correctness and press "b" to boot.Once the system is online, please adjust /boot/grub/menu.lst and change all root (hd0) entries to their correct values. Cause After the update /boot/grub/menu.lst contains root (hd0)for the default boot entry but should contain root (hdx,y)instead. The system is OpenSuSE only, not dual boot. The primary drive is brand new and until this morning worked fine. I was in the middle of using my system when it locked up completely. Something it has never done before. Nothing worked, I couldn't SSH into it from my laptop, CTRL+F1 http://forums.justlinux.com/showthread.php?153793-OpenSuSE-11-4-Grub-17-Error didn't get me to the command prompt, CTRL+SHIFT+SysRq wouldn't work. So I had to hard boot the system. It came down and during the start up I got the GRUB 17 error message. The set up is as follows: SDA1 = / File System = ext4 SDA3 = /Sys_Meters File System = ext4 SDF1 = SWAP SDF2 = /BkUps File System = ext4 MD0 = /home File System = REISER MD1 = /Specials File System = REISER MD2 = /VMWare File System = REISER This is a 4 core 3.0GHz Intel CPU with 8GB RAM. It is a work system (no support from ITS as it runs Linux only) and has been reliable up until about 44 days ago when SDA failed and had to be replaced. And now the GRUB 17 error that I can't seem to figure out how to repair. Ideas? I am close to re-installing the entire system just so I can get back to work and get my billing out the door. But I would much rather I fix the problem and not have to start all over. One by one the penguins steal my sanity... Vanpooling now... do when the system stopped responding completely. CTRL+F1 did not work to allow me into the back so I could http://linux.bigresource.com/OpenSUSE-Install-GRUB-Error-17-on-single-boot-system-11-4-fqMx2RjZp.html log in and see what was happening. CTRL+SHIFT+SysRq did not recover the system or interrupt what ever was causing the lock up. SSH from another system failed as the client did not respond So I had to do a hard boot and when I did I got this: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, please wait... Error 17 Again this is a single grub loading boot system no Windows other than in VMWare inside the install. It is a multi drive with RAID set up workstation that I have at work. The short of it I am sole IT support as our companies ITS will not support Linux. In 5 years of operations with Linux at work this is my first issue, and I can't figure it out. grub loading error I already tried the PartedMagic solution (ref = Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic) and that didn't work. I re-installed the system completely even going to the extent to change my partition scheme just to make sure that wasn't the problem (which doesn't make sense as the system had been running for 46 days non-stop without a problem). Upon reboot after performing a complete security update I got the Error 17 message again. Below is the output of fdisk -l Code: Welcome - Parted Magic (Linux 2.6.30.6-pmagic) Most of the filesystem tools and partition programs featured by Parted Magic include man pages. To read a manual page, simply type man and the name of the tool. (Examples: 'man ntfsprogs' or 'man fdisk') [Code].....
