Grub Loading Error 17 Usb
had it install Grub so I could boot between the two. After playing games on Vista, I rebooted to do some work in Ubuntu. The machine wouldn't boot due to Grub error 17, but after doing something stupid it booted just fine. The ProblemSo, I tell Vista to restart so I can load up Ubuntu. When I should get the Grub menu that lets me choose between Vista and Ubuntu, instead I got this error message: view plain copy to clipboard print about ColdFISH is developed by Jason Delmore. Then I found this post that explains how to reinstall Grub from a Live CD to fix the error.I booted up the Ubuntu Live CD, getting ready to reinstall Grub (2nd link). Something oddWhen the Live CD loaded, I noticed my external USB hard drive was mounted on the desktop. I remembered one this post from the 1st link:"In my case, I have three SATA hard disks.
My BIOS sees them as: HDD1 - 80 GB - Windows HDD2 - 80 GB - Linux HDD3 - 250 GB - MediaLinux sees them as: /dev/sda - 80 GB - Windows /dev/sdb - 250 GB - Media /dev/sdc - 80 GB - LinuxSo it generated device.map assuming that order was correct, i.e.: (hd0) /dev/sda (hd1) /dev/sdb (hd2) /dev/sdcWhen the installer installed GRUB using that data, it tried to install the first part of GRUB on /dev/sda and told it to look for the OS on /dev/sdc. Unfortunately, this translated to "install on (hd0) then look for the OS on (hd2)", so it was looking for the OS on the wrong drive."So one cause of Grub error 17 is the order in which Linux mounts hard drives vs. the mount point where Grub expects to find Linux. The Stupid SolutionI unmounted the external hard drive, then turned it off. I rebooted the computer and a few seconds later BAM! there's the Grub Menu. Views: 64086 | Comments: 7 | Print | Comments (Comment Moderation is enabled. Your comment will not appear until approved.) I have 6 different Linux versions, all on different partitions, and one boot partition to http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/93246/grub-error-17-booting-usb-disk hold the kernel images and grub. On some systems this works great, I get the boot menu and I can pick the linux distro. But on 2 systems I keep getting error 17 (and nothing else onscreen). I've confirmed the partition table ordering is correct, the partition table is valid, no errors on boot partition, etc. I've also reinstalled GRUB onto the MBR several times. Can someone explain why this is happening, and what I can do to fix? grub-legacy share|improve this question edited Dec 30 '13 at 17:35 derobert 44.9k689143 asked Oct 2 '13 at 2:57 TSG 1858 migrated from serverfault.com Oct 2 '13 at 3:02 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote What I've noticed is that some BIOS releases designate USB sticks as disks and initialize them after harddrives in the same system. This causes your grub config to look for the partitions on the wrong drive. I would recommend trying syslinux instead, it is much more capable of running on removable storage. Her

GRUB error 17 when booting opensuse 11 from USB HDD I'm a linux newbie, and wanted to install Opensuse 11 on an external usb HDD. The details of the external HDD are as follows: total size of hard disk: 93.1 GB dev/sdb1: NTFS partition to use with windows.(58.5 GB) dev/sdb2: Extended partition to use for opensuse. (34.5 GB) dev/sdb5: Linux swap (2GB) dev/sdb6: Linux root partition (13.2 GB) dev/sdb7: Home partition. (19.3) In order to boot directly from the USB hdd, i placed the GRUB boot loader on the root partition(dev/sdb6), and set the BIOS boot priority order to (1)USB HDD,(2)Disk Drive, and then (3)internal hard disk. However, now when i try to boot from the USB HDD, i get the error : "GRUB loading... Error 17" Please Help! I booted live with gparted and also with my #! 9.04 cd's to check the partition tables and edit stuff4) I've saved menu.1st to a back up usb flash (I've actually saved the whole grub folder too) so I can post that too...5) Partition table is in order and, again, everything CAN be mounted and viewed (not sure about the swap).6) Everything appears normal to me-(DUH, pebkac error) but I still get this *GRUB Loading stage1.5., GRUB loading, please wait... Error 17* -then nothing.7) I added the *root (hd0,6)* lines (three of them, below) as nothing appeared for root for these. I also edited the titles (and make a backup before I did all this). #! is installed on my hd0,6 (partition #7/sda7).9) I changed the default to default 1 (to boot to windowsXP first for now) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Here is the end part of menu.1st and below my partition table...## End Default Options ## title CrunchBang 9.04, 2.6.28-13 root (hd0,6) uuid 3a5544ef-df3d-439e-8873-ffae92bcc878 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-13-generic root=UUID=3a5544ef-df3d-439e-8873-ffae92bcc878 ro quiet spl
