After installation a reboot is required without cd (but usb in my case). When the PC reboots I get following error: Code: Booting 'opensuse 12.1' root(hd0,1) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.1.0-1.2-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Maxtor_6V320F0_V60SJM5G-part2 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Maxtor_6V320F0_V60SJM5G-part2 splash=silent quiet showopts vga=0x31a [Linux-bzimage, setup=0x4200, size=0x4baef0] initrd /boot/initrd-3.1.0-1.2-desktop error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory Press any key to continue... I tried 2 installations but same result. I have 2GB RAM so that can't be the problem. I also format my root partition as ext4, but the error says something about ext2fs... I didn't change any of the default grub settings neither. Can someone help me? I already tried failsafe but no result. error string and then halt. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del will reboot. The following is a comprehensive list of error messages for the Stage 1: "Hard Disk Error" This error message will occur if the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is being read from a hard disk, and the attempt to determine the size and geometry of the hard disk fails. "Floppy Error" This error message will occur if the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is being read from a floppy disk, and the attempt to determine the size and geometry of the floppy disk fails. It's listed as a different error since the probe sequence is different https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/469041-urgent-boot-fails-error-28-when-grub-tries-to-boot-from-root-image-after-installing-12-1 than for hard disks. "Read Error" This error message will occur if a disk read error happens while trying to read the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5. "Geom Error" This error message will occur if the location of the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is not in the area supported by reading the disk with the BIOS directly. This could occur because the BIOS translated geometry has been changed by the user or the http://www.uruk.org/orig-grub/errors.html disk is moved to another machine or controller after installation, or GRUB was not installed using itself (if it was, the Stage 2 version of this error would have been seen during that process and it would not have completed the install). Errors Reported by the Stage 1.5 The general way that the Stage 1.5 handles errors is to print an error number in the form "Error: " and then halt. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del will reboot. The error numbers correspond to the Errors Reported by the Stage 2 in the listed sequence. Errors Reported by the Stage 2 The general way that the Stage 2 handles errors is to abort the operation in question, print an error string, then (if possible) either continue based on the fact that an error occurred or wait for the user to deal with the error. The following is a comprehensive list of error messages for the Stage 2 (error numbers for the Stage 1.5 are listed before the colon in each description): 1 : "Selected item won't fit into memory" This error is returned if a kernel, module, or raw file load command is either trying to load it's data such that it won't fit into memory or it is simply too big. 2 : "Selected disk doesn't exist" This error is returned

I am dual-booting between Ubuntu and Vista from a 2yr-old TOSHIBA laptop. The version of grub loading error Ubuntu I was using is 9.10 (ok, should have updated a while back, mea culpa...) Yesterday I couldn't load Ubuntu and I got a message Code: ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[long number] done not exist. Dropping to a shell! I managed to sort out the problem thanks to this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1355385 and used Ubuntu without any problem. Now today I tried to switch the computer on again and I am getting the error message Code: GRUB loading stage 1.5 GRUB loading, please wait... Error 15 Following the advice on the post above, I updated GRUB to GRUB2 last night. Maybe I shouldn't have... The screen with the GRUB error message comes before the screen that would let me choose between Vista and Ubuntu and won't let me use a command prompt or anything. The only thing I seem to be able to access is if I press F2 at start up which takes me to the Setup utility screen or F12 which takes me to the Boot Manager. Any help would be appreciated as, in effect, my computer is useless as it is now... After the install process which was successful i reboot only to find that grub tells me error 28 (0k lower / 0k upper). I have used this version of centos in the past on other systems (with no problem) that were not as new as the one i am currently trying to use. My current setup is core 2 duo with 4g ram lsi raid 10 3.6tb. I have never had to change anything involving the bootloader before so i am not sure where to start to even look to find what the issue is. I would guess that it is trying to tell me that there is not enuff memory to start the kernel but how do i fix this.... -Thanxrob Top YBellefeuille Posts: 312 Joined: 2012/03/06 22:30:17 Location: Ottawa Re: Centos 6 new install Grub error 28 Quote Postby YBellefeuille » 2012/09/08 20:01:38 Grub error 28:Code: Select all28 : Selected item cannot fit into memory
This error is returned if a kernel, module, or raw file load
command is either trying to load its data such that it won't fit
into memory or it is simply too big.
That's a new one for me. Please post the contents of /boot/grub/grub.conf and the result of this command: ls -al /boot. From what i can tell there is some sort of incompatibility between my lsi9240 and my gigabyte mobo causing the mobo to report memory at zero with the card installed. Unless you guys know some trick to make
