error. This machine has a separate /boot partition _however_ that bootpartition is ext2, not ext3 (and therefore has no journalling). On rebooting (multiple times) the machine would fail to rebootand I would see one of the two following messages: Grub Loading Stage2 Read Erroror Grub Read Error"smartctl -H /dev/sda" yielded:SMART Heath Status OKOn booting of a CD in "linux wyse grub loading stage2 rescue" mode, all disk partitionsmounted except /boot.I executed "fdisk /dev/sda1" sda1 being the /boot partitionand though I executed no commands to alter the partition,I exited with "w" to save changes as opposed to "q" whichwould exit without saving changes (even though I executedno "partition altering" commands). Now, however, a "linux rescue" boot finds and mounts allpartitions including the /boot partition.---------I tried grub grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0)and then I tried: grub-install --root-directory=/ /dev/sda1and both times, the machine would still not boot but again gethung up on one of the following messages: Grub Loading Stage1.5 Read Erroror Grub Read ErrorI deleted the Stage1.5 files, reran grub again, and sure, the Stage1.5 error message went away but the machine wouldnow get hung up on "Stage2 error".I finally INSTALLED a new OS, CentOS 5.5, the install completedbut on booting, I still get "Grub Stage2" errors. On this re-install, I left all partitions sizes the same andso /boot was the same size, same location.---------And so, I can't boot off of this disk.

Pfff.... this moring i've download the DVD... and the CD (boot.iso) to try to boot Fedora. I've update the system with the boot CD and the http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=188267 DVD (it was on my harddisk...i've not burn it onto a real DVD, i've burn only the CDROM). I've a problem with GRUB. When i start the computer, it says: "GRUB Loading stage2..." then it hangs forever.... and nothing else appears on the screen. With the rescue CD (boot.iso), i've open the SHELL, i've wrote: chroot /mnt/sysimage grub-install /dev/sda grub-install /dev/sda1 grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/fd0 My primary harddisk is sdb, so i can boot in Windows without problems... but if i boot with the floppy-disk inserted, the result is the text "GRUB Loading stage 2..."... I've edit the file /boot/boot/idontremember/device.map and, as i've two hard disk, i've switch their names, but the result is that the only text that apperas on the screen is "GRUB ", so i suppose the original file (guessed by GRUB) was correct, and i've restored it. This have moved me back on the original situation, with "GRUB Loading stage2..."-->remove the floppy->Ctrl+Alt+Del->Boot in Windows. My partitions are /dev/sdb one disk, one partition: with windows /dev/sda with many partitions, GRUB is installed here /dev/sda1 mount of / ... this also contains /boot (i haven't /boot in a different p

I though the problem to be one of those dual boot/Vista problems... But after reading and making all those grub /boot/grub/menu.1st stuff I read...nothing helped... I took away the Vista disk... leaving only one HDD purely for linux... Again - failed! The problem might be, that since the smaller HDD is still with the old cable (the wide one) and the motherboard has only one slot for this cable, I had to connect it together with the DVD rom. Now, again, as with or without 320GB hdd, I can complete the installation, it recognises all the discs...and with live CD I can surf all partitions... But Grub somehow fails to read it... I tried with jumpers - made DVD master HDD slave and opposite... same thing always Grub Loading----stage 2Read Error... The Grub Menu never appears... I am really out of options here... should I format the 40GB to Fat32 and Install Linux so that it puts himself after that? Maybe first GB would be Fat and then linux partition begins? Should it help... ? Adv Reply October 4th, 2008 #2 Pumalite View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Only Linux Join Date Mar 2007 Location Here & Now Beans 16,549 Di

A su terminal and do: Code: fdisk -l That will show all your disks and partitions. Paste it here. Try and explain what you think you have done. eg; which partition is which, where you installed grub etc...?
