I took the hard disk drive out and put one in out of another computer I have and it reports the same error, but when I put it back in the other computer the hard drive is fine. So I am wondering is it my motherboard or some other problem. I've also swapped out the ram, same error. It is a compaq presario x1000 laptop. It was bought at a work auction 1720 smart hard for next to nothing, but I would like to get it working for the kids. That might be the culprit since a perfectly working drive from another system reports the same error when connected. Try the original drive in your other system and see what diagnostics reports on the drive. I recommend downloading and burning to CD a bootable ISO of hard drive diagnostics tool from the maker of the hard disk. Then boot off the CD to run the diagnostics. Just be careful which tests you choose to run as some will wipe the drive.Goin' Fishin' (Some day) Report • #2 HopperRox December 28, 2012 at 20:51:47 SMART is located on the hard drive board and the fact is has been tripped is a warning of a failure being detected. The disk may test ok, but an issue is being reported. I would back up pictures and important data onto DVD's or over to another hard drive. If this was my hard drive, it would be like dog that bit me and I just couldn't trust it, so I would take heed of the warning. Report • Start a discussion Related Solutions

Only after pressing F1 does the computer come on. My computer has slowed down very much and I am concerned. What can I do? Right now, the error indicates attribute 05 (attr:05) has a problem, which is the number of reallocated sectors. Sectors are the lowest unit of storage with hard drives. Each new hard drive starts off with a bank of spare sectors to replace ones that have gone bad for some reason (e.g. sudden shock when the drive is reading/writing). The error means that the number of back-up sectors is running low or is already used up. Usually, this means the drive is starting to go south. It doesn't *always* mean the drive is bad, but is usually an indication of so. I'd recommend running a full disk scan using the hard drive manufacturer's utility to determine if there are any bad sectors showing. If the hard drive is indeed going south, the only practical solution is replacing the hard drive. It's also possible to disable SMART so the error doesn't show up during bootup. Do you know who the hard drive manufacturer is? (My Computer > Right click C: drive > Properties > Hardware tab. There should be a name for the drive.) The above information comes from a Google Search on "1720 - SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure (Failing ATTR: 05)" I would suggest you do the same and read some of the information presented. zep If your problem is solved, here's how to say thanks Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement.
