Booting From External Hard Drive Windows 7
an external USB hard drive to back up documents and photos, but now the PC refuses to boot if the device is connected. This is a recent problem despite using the same hard drive for some time...it's as if the PC is trying to boot from the external drive which of course doesn't contain the relevant files. As soon as the Windows start up process has begun booting from external hard drive windows 8 then it can be connected again. Is this something to do with the Windows boot configuration, if so how do I change it? If it's relevant my operating system is Vista Home Premium SP1. CD or DVD drive can be first but make sure it is not set to boot from external or USB devices. Apr 28, 2009 #2 rduff TS Rookie Topic Starter Posts: 31 Problem solved....thanks! a Seagate 3 TB USB 3.0 drive to the rear USB 3.0 port, the system fails to boot past the Intel splash bootable external hard drive linux screen. It just cycles endlessly. Yet if I plug the same drive in after booting, it works fine. I read in earlier message on intel board https://communities.intel.com/thread/38705 that as of April 2013 the problem was recognized by http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/boot-problem-with-external-hard-drive-connected.126690/ Microsoft and being worked on. Is there yet a patch or driver update or some solution that I can apply? Are there any workarounds? In both cases windows tells me that I have the most current driver. But the answer comes back suspicially fast, like it's hard to believe that Windows is actually searching anywhere. Of course, I could try doing a custom install and salvage my data from Windows.old. Unfortunately, I was in a bind, no working optical drive or a USB stick I could use. So I thought of the next option; putting the hard disk in an external hard disk enclosure, connect it to a working computer and copy over my data and so this is what I ended up doing.
