Most probably, either the enclosure or the HDD itself has sustained some damage. Unfortunately, in both cases your safest bet of recovering the data stored on the drive is to contact a data recovery company. You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=5YD266 Does it show under Disk Management? As WD's DLG tool managed to access the drive, you can try scanning it with some data recovery tool and see whether you will be able to access the data. I dont know what happened it was working fine, now all of a sudden I get this error when 80% of what Im copying is done. My USB external hard drive is now giving out I/O errors while copying files, would you think its damage/ hardware issue. Its a few years old, should I buy a new one, or could I fix the one I have. I am receiving an error with one of my hard drives for some of my files. An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. I have done some research online but the solutions I tried did not work. I tried connecting my WD hard drive to different USB ports on my laptop and the same result happens. I also tried connecting to a different laptop. I tried chkdsk F: /f in the command prompt and that did not find errors and still same result. I also did a defrag on my hard drive as well. I even tried logging in safe mode but that was also unsuccessful. It appears there are no drivers to update. I also tried troubleshoot unde
