drive in the mail and I would like to be able to test it for errors when it gets here. seagate seatools I want something that will be able to run some simple tests to ensure there are no bad sectors or read/write errors, as well as check the SMART status. What software is popular for this

Over the last few weeks I have been unsuccessful in running a full system scan. Bullguard just free error scan stops at various different files and just doesnt complete. It has a couple of times managed 99% but mostly it will stop at 18% or 33%. Im not a computer Geek so Im not sure what I should be looking for or what to do. I have already had some support asking me to do various things but nothing seems to work. What do you suggest? Allowing another security system, for instance Windows Defender or Microsoft Security Essentials to run in the background will cause big problems when you try to system scan. Just cant understand why it never completes a scan. Ive run disk defrag, disk check, even tried to run scan in safe mode with no success.
