a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it. I select the MBR option https://community.wd.com/t/wd-my-passport-ultra-i-o-error/12515 and the message "The request could not be performed because of http://superuser.com/questions/809643/wd-my-passport-read-error an I/O device error. I see Disk 4 Unknown Not Initialized. Also, there are no errors in Device Manager. Are there any options for me to access the drive? Thanks RC2904 2015-02-11 13:06:32 UTC #2 Just to make sure you are aware... initializing the disk hard drive is data destructive so if you are trying to access files that are already on the drive then your data may be missing or corrupt. If you are trying to set up the drive to be useable as a blank disk then proceed. Have you tried turning off antivirus or try different usb ports? If you have o device error one available maybe also try a different computer to help determine if the problem is something on the drive itself or on your computer? You can try running the clean command in diskpart first to make sure all the old partition table info is erased but just be careful to make sure you are working with the correct drive. -open command prompt and type diskpart -run the command list disk -find a drive that matches your drive size and type select disk 3 (or whichever drive is your portable drive) -type detail disk This should give you details to confirm you are working with the correct drive. Mine says WD My Passport 0748 USB Device -type clean This will erase all the data on the drive including the partition table. -go back into disk management and try to initialize and create a partition. It keeps bleeping and the white light continually flashes. The PC immediately reports that E drive cannot be accessed due to I/O error. I have tried all the basic stuff and read some other ideas but my IT skills are basic and I am not comfortable to leave it with some guys to fix. Once you have the drive out you may plug it directly into a desktop computer (it won't fit in the case but the power and data cables will be the same) and hope for the best, it may be that the USB<->SATA converter board was faulty and not the drive, otherwise there's not much hope left, besides taking it to a data recovery professional with a big check if your data is that valuable*. But you have backups, right? share|improve this answer answered Sep 10 '14 at 11:10 user256743 The WD passports don't, annoyingly –Journeyman Geek♦ Sep 11 '14 at 14:14 add a comment| up vote 0
