At start up, enter the set up (usually press F1, F2 or Del during POST) and see if the drive is identified in the BIOS. If it's not, chances are that the drive is dead (assuming that nothing else has changed). I bought a new hard drive, a seagate momentus 20 gig but the laptop won't find the drive. I keep getting the error no bootable devices. I have hard drive looked for settings in the BIOS for SATA drives and can't find anything about hard drives at all. If someone could help I would be very greatful. Thanks Neal Mar 7, 2007 #1 Tmagic650 TS Ambassador Posts: 17,233 +234 Did you have the drive properly installed in it's metal frame before installing it in the laptop compartment? There has to be something in the bios telling the system that it has a hard drive. You might have to boot up using a CD with dell hard drive XP or floppy boot disk. Any new drive needs to be formatted and an OS has to be installed on it Mar 7, 2007 #2 nealdarty TS Rookie Topic Starter I have tried to boot up using windows xp and get the message windows did not detect any hard drives and then the computer trys to restart. I have tried the drive with and without the drive caddy and I even took the bottom off the laptop and made sure the drive was seated all the way in. As for the bios I have looked in every option and only found one option that related to hdd and that was hdd aucoustic mode. Moderator Edit: Read: Dell Bios Password removal. Ensure the connectors are in firmly. If it still can't physically find it the drive might have failed. share|improve this answer answered Jan 23 '14 at 10:04 Matthew Williams 3,69281532 if that works, does that indicate that the drive is close to failing? –mcmillab Oct 2 at 23:31 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote This error can occur if the laptop was bumped hard enough to dislodge the drive connection internally. Often removing and reinserting the drive can solve the issue. Always turn off and unplug the computer when performing these tasks. On page 25 of the service manual are instructions to remove the hard drive. To reinstall the drive, reverse the steps. If the error continues, it is possible the drive has failed. share|improve this answer answered Jan 23 '14 at 14:58 CharlieRB 17.5k33168 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote Reseat the drive means - Removing and then reinstall.
