Understanding Write Protection Although write protection can seem like a bothersome issue when trying to save new files and data to an external hard drive, it is actually a very useful external hard drive security feature. Write protection is a mechanism that prevents any modification or deletion of important data on the device. So, while it can seem like an inconvenient feature when trying to save new documents, it protects users from accidentally copying over important files they do not wish to lose. What Causes Write Protection Errors If the user does not add write protection to a WD hard drive, then it is likely that it occurred as an error.
