You can attempt to fix it by executing this command in your Terminal: sudo fsck -y /dev/sda2 Replace /dev/sda2 with the appropriate partition you want to fix. share|improve this answer answered Jun 7 '14 at 16:41 Naveen 4,17642956 fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 e2fsck 1.42.9 (4-Feb-2014) ext2fs_open2: Bad magic number in super-block fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks... fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda2 The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3

because of sudden Input/Output errors when trying to access certain files. man e2fsck It was running fine until various applications started crashing like for example Pidgin (in retrospect probably because e2fsck ext4 of DBus crashing). I decided to reboot and now can't login anymore because the DBus module fails to load which in turn means that HAL doesn't load either http://askubuntu.com/questions/478124/how-do-i-repair-a-fat-32-filesystem-partition-input-output-error and so I can't use my keyboard to login. The error message I get from DBus is that it can't access the file /etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.conf because of an Input/Output error. I tried to fix/see what was wrong using the arch livecd. Because I thought my problem had to do with a pacman update that had failed before https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=94717 I'd rebooted, I updated my system and I noticed that when pacman tried to access other files it came back with the same error message. The files seemed pretty random, one of them was fakeroot.conf and then several library files like libfaad (sorry this is kind of vague but I'm away from home right now and can't go online very often so I'm writing this from memory). I'm guessing its a hard drive problem because checking the filesystem for errors came back with nothing. I was just wondering whether anyone had any other ideas before I go and reinstall. I'm going back home tomorrow so I'll be able to follow any advice/reinstall then. It used to work just fine. Yes I put one of my most demanding sites there. Then I started getting these errors. Is it possible that the disk can't handle the load? My provider insist that it's user's error though Actually, I think this was a case of user error. Your hard drives are all fine, and I've confirmed I am able to read and write files to all mounted partitions (/home, /home1, /home2, /home3 and /home4). I did need to run an fsck to fix several errors on your filesystem, and it also appears you have a whole load of unresolved links leading all over your system (fsck tried to clear some of these manually, all may not have been fixed). This system appears to have been very poorly maintained, however as of right now all disks and all filesystems are accessible. I will put this system back online shortly and let you know when I've co
LINUX HOWTO | 2 Replies More Bad Disk This article I am trying to explain how to deal with " Input/output error " when you initiate any commands in Linux. I have pointed some examples that reports similar error. # du -bash: /usr/bin/du: Input/output error #mkdir sampledir mkdir: cannot create directory `sampledir': Input/output error Input/output error while running the command mostly due to two reason. Either it could be bad blocks on the disk or someone hacked your machine. In this situation first suggestion would be to check /var/log/messages for any disk related alerts (might see some sense key alerts). tail -n 100 /var/log/messages tail -f /var/log/messages If you notice any disk issues , try any disk utility to confirm this. One option would be use smarttools. You can check smartool option to fix bad blocks. If you already installed it you can take the advantage of that. Next immediate action would be take backup of your system. Good if you already have it :-). If you have good backup its safe to reboot. If your system was hacked there are chances they might messed up your file and system would not work after reboot. You can also try fsck but it really dont fix most time if it bad block issue. Fsck can fix only if it related to any filesystem related issues. Usually fsck will fail in between as when it try to read the file at bad block. Now if try to reboot , it can also give the same output. You can try init 6. # reboot bash: /sbin/reboot: Input/output error # shutdown -r now bash: /sbin/shutdown: Input/output error If the above reboot commands doesnot work try either forced reboot or shutdown . Forced Reboot echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger Forced Shutdown echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq echo o > /proc/sysrq-trigger You might also likeHow To Fix / Repair Bad Blocks In LinuxHow To Backup LVM Configuration On Linux (vgcfgbackup & vgcfgrestore)Linux Crontab: How To Configure Cron With Best Examples? How To List Linux Pci Devices Using lspci CommandSet Date And Time In Linux And Sync With Hardware (CMOS)Linux Hdparm Command: Display Hard Disk Model and Serial NumberLinux - Manage Spaces And Special Characters In File NameUnderstand Linux Su Comman
