copy, plz help - need help quickly I had to back up a drive, it was NTFS, I backed it up to a folder on my Desktop. I then formatted the drive via a windows machine into NTFS format, then rebooted in Ubuntu and went to copy everything back onto the drive. Before I did anything I did a recursive chmod to make sure it didn't run into any problems: Code: sudo chmod -R 777 * Then I went to copy it all back. Code: sudo cp * ~/Desktop/EXTERNAL And it copies for a bit, then I get a ******** of fail: Code: cp: cannot create directory `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/backup 3a': Input/output error cp: cannot create directory `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/batch3': Input/output error cp: cannot create directory `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/bcpc cars': Input/output error cp: cannot create directory `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/BJPrinter': Input/output error `~BLANK.ZIP' -> `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/~BLANK.ZIP' cp: cannot create regular file `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/~BLANK.ZIP': Input/output error `BOB.jpg' -> `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/BOB.jpg' And it just goes on and on and fails at every single file until it gets to the end. I need this drive operational tomorrow - I didn't expect Ubuntu to give me any ******** - appears I was most definitely wrong. In a jam, whatever is the most stable will fail. I've never seen anything like this. Content size is approx 17Gb in case that ma

But I have http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/39905/input-output-error-when-accessing-a-directory experienced "Input/output error": $ rm pic -R rm: cannot remove `pic/60.jpg': Input/output error rm: cannot remove `pic/006.jpg': Input/output error rm: cannot remove `pic/008.jpg': Input/output error rm: cannot remove `pic/011.jpg': Input/output error $ ls -la pic ls: cannot access pic/60.jpg: Input/output error -????????? ? ? ? ? ? 006.jpg -????????? ? ? ? ? ? 006.jpg -????????? ? ? ? ? ? 011.jpg I was wondering what the problem is? How can I recover or remove the directory pic and all of its content? My OS is Ubuntu 12.04, and the removable hard drive has ntfs filesystem. Other directories not containing or inside pic on the removable hard drive are working fine. Input/output error" when copying from RHEL 3.9 (2.4.21-52.ELsmp) to RHEL 5.1 and /mnt/b is NFS V3 mounted. /mnt/b is created as a zero byte file (i.e. file is created but contents are not copied and the I/O error is produced). Error log on RH 3 system shows: kernel: call_verify: server accept status: 2 last message repeated 2 times kernel: RPC: garbage, exit EIO after each failure. If a second attempt to do the "cp" command is made after the zero byte file is created, it works correctly, presumably because the file has already been created. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): RHEL 3.9, 2.4.21-52.ELsmp How reproducible: cp filea /mnt/fileb where, /mnt is an NFS v3 file system mounted on a remote RH 5.1 (2.6.18-53.1.6.el5) system and /mnt/fileb does not exist prior to the "cp" command. "cp" command is performed on a RH 3.9 (2.4.21-52.ELsmp) system. Steps to Reproduce: 1. See "How reproducible" above. 2. 3. Actual results: cp: cannot cr
