Basically guys, I have an ipod video 5.5g 30gb - and all was fine up until a few weeks ago when it locked u and I got the sad mac logo. So I ordered a new 120gb hard drive to put in it as the old 30gb just wasn't big enough any more. I've connected it all back together and I thought it was all good. I connected the ipod to my mac and it told me that had to initialise the drive. So I went into disk utility and tried to format it as mac journaled only to come across the error: "Disk Erase failed with the error: POSIX reports: The operation couldn’t be completed. Resource busy" bit of a bugger - so i started to dig around and came across an apple post by hobbsit_atx (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa...) - and i tried the terminal command only to get the error code -16 the operation couldn't be completed. So now i've tried the termainal commands with the same result (error-16) and itunes just tells me that the ipod is corrupt and I need to restore - which i try only for itunes to give me the "1416" error - which from what I can see - there isn't a fix. I'm getting nearly to breaking point now, and this ipod is about to be launched out of the window. Can anyone please help me? Or have I managed to screw this thing up so badly I've now got a small door stop? Help?!!! Answered! View the answer I have this problem too Subscribed to new answers Is this a good question? Switched to a Mac from a PC last summer and only recently realized that I could format my iPod for a Mac system, which I assumed would make it work better. After a seemingly successful restore, my iPod totally failed the next time I tried to update it with some new music. I'm getting the same error 1416 and iTunes is unable to restore it. now, I can't restore it. I have it formatted for my mac (Leopard). I've tried using Disk Utility to wipe the HD and start from scratch but to no avail. I updated iTunes to the current version also. Help! Share Question Flag as... hard drives electronics iPod MP3 video classic restore error 5g Observing members: 0 Composing members: 0 4 Answers it requires some finagling in Terminal, but should not be too hard. First, connect the iPod to your computer and open Terminal. Type: diskutil list You will get a list something to the effect of: /dev/disk0 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *931.5 Gi disk0 1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk0s1 2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 931.2 Gi disk0s2 /dev/disk1 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: Apple_partition_scheme *27.9 Gi disk2 1: Apple_partition_map 31.0 Ki disk2s1 2: Apple_MDFW 64.0 Mi disk2s2 3: Apple_HFS Hobbsit’s iPod 27.9 Gi disk2s3 So, basically, disk 0 above is my computer's internal HD and disk 1 is my iPod in this case. Remember the number of your iPod disk. Open Disk Utility. Basically, you have to unmount the drive to make it formatable without the "Resource in Use" error….at least in my case. So, eject the disk in Disk Utility (the application). Once ejected, go back to Terminal and type this command: sudo diskutil eraseDisk HFS+ iPod disk1 Where the "1" in disk1 is replaced by whatever number your iPod appeared as in the list from the diskutil list command. You may be prompted for your admin password, so type it in if prompted. Once the iPod is formatted, pop open iTunes (if it does not auto-pop) and restore it. And explode into dance.
