tell me the limit of the shape tuple? python numpy share|improve this question asked May 16 '11 at 18:30 mileski 5518 I try it on my computer, and it generate a .npy file of size 1.60 GB (1,728,000,096 bytes). –riza May 17 '11 at 0:45 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted Its not a fundamental limit of the shape tuple, its that you don't have enough memory (RAM) on your system, hence the MemoryError. Again 20*20*20*30*30*30 is 216 million 64-bit (8 byte) floats or a little more than 1.6 GB of RAM. So do you have 1.6 GB of RAM free while running the script at that point? (Don't forget to all the RAM used by python, the OS, other running programs, etc.). If you are in linux/unix you can see how much free memory by typing free -m from the command prompt. In windows you can see free memory by going to the task manager. Furthermore, some OSes limit the amount of memory that a single process (like python) can

I am using Pycharm and I keep getting: MemoryError even when I try and only create the array. Here is how I've tried to create the array of zeros: import numpy as np last_array = np.zeros((211148,211148)) I've tried increasing the memory heap in Pycharm from 750m to 1024m as per this question: http://superuser.com/questions/919204/how-can-i-increase-the-memory-heap-in-pycharm, but that doesn't seem to help. Let me know if you'd like any further clarification. That is terrifying. It is a very sparse array though. Is there any way to create an empty array with values in certain positions, such as: last_array[211148][9] but everywhere else would be empty? –Andrew Earl May 13 at 15:28 This may be helpful: stackoverflow.com/questions/1857780/… –Keozon May 13 at 15:35 3 Or the scipy.sparse module... –schwobaseggl May 13 at 15:37 It depends on what you are trying to do, but in this case it will be really impossible to create an array that big unless you have the memory for it. In graph problems, we sacrifice speed by making use of an adjacency list. –smac89 May 13 at 15:37 | show 1 more comment 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 5 down vote accepted Look into using the sparse array capabilities within scipy: scipy.sparse documentation. There are a set of examples and tutorials on the scipy.sparse library here: Scipy lecture notes: Sparse Matrices in SciPy This may help you solve your memory issues, as well as make everything run faster. To create an empty sparse array with values in certain positions as you asked in your comment: Is there any way to create an empty
Inappropriate ♦ ♦ Huge arrays Hi, I have a numpy newbie question. I want to store a huge amount of data in an array. http://numpy-discussion.10968.n7.nabble.com/Huge-arrays-td25254.html This data come from a measurement setup and I want to write them to disk later since there is nearly no time for this during the measurement. To put some https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/26800594/Memory-Error-Python.html numbers up: I have 2*256*2000000 int16 numbers which I want to store. I tried data1 = numpy.zeros((256,2000000),dtype=int16) data2 = numpy.zeros((256,2000000),dtype=int16) This works for the first array data1. However, it returns memory error with a memory error for array data2. I have read somewhere that there is a 2GB limit for numpy arrays on a 32 bit machine but shouldn't I still be below that? I use Windows XP Pro 32 bit with 3GB of RAM. If someone has an idea to help me I would be very glad. Thanks in advance. A: Because Python, by default, expects enough memory to be available to perform the requested action. In this case, however, it exhausted all of the available memory (i.e. the memory allowed to it by the operating system), so a Memory Error exception is raised. How much memory is in your sub? Well you said that it has 2942 rows * 58 colums = 170,636 What kind of things are in each cell? How much memory is required for each item? If each "only" requires 4 bytes, then this array requires 682,544 bytes (about 680 MB) just for the data. This does not include any overhead associated with the structure itself. To transpose this array requires just as much space, so you're already at 1,365,088 (ab
