Private Message First Cup of Ubuntu Join Date Jul 2006 Beans 8 Bash: Input/Output Error on every command Hi I have a very old Dell Inspiron on which Ubuntu 7.04 is installed. The kernel version is 2.6.24-19-generic. Sometimes, suddenly something happens and then every command from bash gives the same error: ~$ autoconf -V -bash: /usr/bin/autoconf: Input/output error ~$ ad -bash: /usr/bin/python: Input/output error The file system becomes read-only and no files can even be 'touch'ed. However, uname -r (and possibly other commands) still keep working. If you press Tab-Tab at the terminal, it hangs and then there is no way other than hard-boot to get stuff to work again. Can anyone suggest something to repair this annoying recurrence. Last edited by manish_jain; September 27th, 2008 at 12:48 AM. The read-only action is an attempt to prevent filesystem damage. Unfortunately if the bad disk/partition contains the root files then the system quickly becomes unstable as nothing can be

Everything has been going fine and I have not made any changes for a while. However, I have just noticed that Webalizer is no longer producing reports properly (they seem garbled) and now I cannot even copy files via FTP or even do a mkdir without getting an error (see below). Code: mkdir testing mkdir: cannot create directory `testing': Input/output error I tried to search for this and found people had similar er

It used to work just fine. Yes I put one of my most demanding input output error sites there. Then I started getting these errors. Is it possible that the disk can't handle the load? My provider insist that it's user's error though Actually, I think this was a case of user error. Your hard drives are all fine, and I've confirmed I am able to read and write files to all mounted partitions (/home, /home1, /home2, /home3 and /home4). I did need to run an fsck to fix several errors on your filesystem, and it also appears you have a whole load of unresolved links leading all over your system (fsck tried to clear some of these manually, all may not have been fixed). This system appears to have been very poorly maintained, however as of right now all disks and all filesystems are accessible. I will put this system back online shortly and let you know when I've confirmed it is back online. So we have a system that's working just fine for now and then suddenly crash for no reason. After doing some check my host provider says that NOTHING is wrong with the server. I got my server back and yea everything is working. How can this happen? So after all those checks and reboot, the server is running fine, including the drive. However, I am afraid of moving stuff to the server again. If it
