power to do the printing legwork instead of the printer. Well, it SOUNDS good, but it turns out there may be some compatibility issues. They call it (maybe others do too, we just standardize on HP printers) Host Based printing. pcl xl error illegaloperatorsequence konica minolta There is no PCL, PCL5, PCL5e, PS, etc, it does magic. Some programs don't like this magic. As I searched Internet and found the same problem over and over, with some clever solutions (HP has a "beta" fix to download, use a generic driver, other "thoughtful" solutions) - that did not work for me - I decided to go with a workaround. Install PrimoPDF, print to it, let it open after creation, then print. Extra work? Yes, but they pcl xl error illegaloperatorsequence lexmark did not want to buy a "standard" PDL (I believe it's called) printer with PCL support. So I finish uninstalling all the crap I just put on, reboot, Windows finds the printer, I point to the location of the SAME file I used for the initial install, let it finish, test page, and done. Just for S!@# and giggles, I had the user try to print again. WTF, it worked! For the love of God do not mess with that printer! Bottom line - I hate that model now, and if you are having the same issue, load everything (even all the crap you don't need), load the beta fix driver, use the HP uninstaller in the start menu, restart, let windows find it, point to the "host based" driver from the HP website (not the big one, that is the "load everything" one), test page, and give it a shot! Feb 4, 2013 at 7:34 UTC You typically receive a PCL XL error if your device does not understand the printer control language. Does the device support PCL 6? Otherwise try the PCL 5 driver. It is possible a firmware update for the machine would enable PCL 6 functionality. 1 Anaheim OP long85 Feb 4, 2013 at 7:59 UTC I just got done fixing something very similar with an HP device and Win7 64bit workstation. Try downloading various https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/298969-pcl-xl-error-with-hp-laserjet-355-and-win-7-x64-universal-pcl-6-driver older universal HP print drivers. I ended up using Universal PCL5 and 5e for a couple of our older printers. 1 Pimiento OP AlekJ Feb 4, 2013 at 10:39 UTC Tried a firmware update, and every driver available (various version of both pcl 5 and 6) -- no results. Seeing as to how the issue is strictly with large color text files, I'm just going to overlook it. Apparently hp doesn't even support that series of printers with windows 7. Thanks for all the help though, much appreciated. 0 Datil OP Priscilla@HP Feb 4, 2013 at 11:57 UTC Brand Representative for HP Hello Alek, thanks for your posting. However, so that I can continue researching your issue, could you please check the printer for the model number or product number as I am not locating a Laserjet 355 in the list of Laserjet printers produced by HP. 0 Chipotle OP Rob Marques Feb 4, 2013 at 11:58 UTC I'd try the PCL5e driver. 1 Cayenne OP Suzanne2324 Feb 11, 2013 at 5:32 UTC I'm in the same boat, I have shared a printer on a Win7 and am trying to print from an xp. 8 HP 3600 PCL XL error - IllegalTag by Nik · Published November 30, 2011 · Updated February 20, 2015 We started with print server migration from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. This huge upgrade could give us possible x64 driver issues as http://www.wincert.net/windows-server/hp-3600-pcl-xl-error-illegaltag/ Windows Server 2008 R2 is 64-bit operating system. The first printer that started to gave me http://www.fixya.com/support/t8106084-hp_color_laserjet_3500_pcl_xl headaches was HP Color LaserJet 3600n with its "IllegalTag" error. The only available driver for this printer is HP CLJ 3600 Host based driver that could have problems if your printer is installed via TCP-IP port as it is in our case. I have installed x64 and x86 version of HP Color LaserJet 3600 and when I tried to print a test pcl xl page I got following error message: PCL XL error Subsystem: KERNELE Error: IllegalTag Operator: OpenDataSource Position: 2 I have also received this error several time on the print server: Incompatible Print Settings There are one or more conflicting settings. One of the conflicting settings is: Paper Source: Feature2:Option2 Restore my previous settings. Keep this setting, and I will change it later. I think that this second error message is partially related to wrong print driver as I've tried pcl xl error to use HP Universal Print Driver instead of HP 3600 driver. No matter that I've changed the driver I've received this error during printer installation on my Windows 7 x64 machine. Solution: I have checked the Printing Preferences page and by default ‘Paper Source' box was empty. I have selected ‘Plain' option for paper source and PCL error IllegalTag message disappeared.
