I was getting a message to "Please insert SD Card", meanwhile my SD card was inserted AND I could play music off my SD card without any problem. Similarly, any app that wanted to write to SD card stopped working. Further investigation showed that my /sdcard/dcim folder contained a bunch of very corrupt looking files - they were crazy sizes and had all sort of strange graphical characters in their names. The same behavior was happening when I inserted my card into developer G1. With the developer G1, I could remount sd card to rw, and then could do "echo hello > /sdcard/hello.txt", but if I tried to erase files from /dcim (which had everything corrupted) - my sd card became read only again. My eventual solution was to mount my G1 in windows and pull off what files I could (my music) and then reformat the card. My gripes with And
