Solution: If you receive the error message: Unable to open the service 'Tomcat6' when starting Tomcat on Windows Vista / 7 / 8, this is likely caused by Windows User Access Control (UAC). To solve the problem, run Tomcat as an administrator (either by logging into Windows as an administrator or by right-clicking on the Tomcat Monitor and running this as an adguess) , you will see this error when you restart

says "service" . Users will think there is some problem with the tomcat service . But this error is related to the Tomcat Monitor https://www.maplesoft.com/support/faqs/detail.aspx?sid=33857 (tomcat6w.exe) and User Account Control (UAC) in windows. You can fix this issue in 2 ways 1. disable UAC altogether . (not recommended [ i don't have enough knowledge on UAC :-) ] ) 2. this is a better approach . in this we are allowing the program http://911techtips.blogspot.com/2011/11/access-is-denied-unable-to-open-service.html to run as administrator always . go to /bin . right click ontomcat6w.exe, select Properties select the Compatibility tab. Under Privilege Level, select Run this program as an administrator, click OK. reference :http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc709691(WS.10).aspx#BKMK_S2 hope this helps someone. pop up every time I restart my machine: Access is denied. Unable to open the service ‘Tomcat6'. Since it takes less time and effort to click on OK than to sort out the problem https://blog.paulbouwer.com/2010/10/23/the-case-of-the-annoying-tomcat-6-monitor/ that is exactly what I have been doing … but enough is enough. Tomcat IS http://grokbase.com/t/tomcat/users/09bbqkx034/error-unable-to-open-the-service-tomcat6-on-windows-2003 running – so what is causing this error? I confirmed that the Tomcat 6 service was running even though I got this message box – so what was causing it ? It turns out that Tomcat 6 Monitor Application was causing this error. Tomcat 6 Monitor Application is a GUI for monitoring and configuring the Tomcat 6 Service. It unable to needs to be executed by the Administrator user and the UAC is getting in the way at start up time. Are you feeling brave ? The only solution I have found to work so far is to remove the Tomcat 6 Monitor Application from the Windows startup. And the only way to do this is to remove a registry entry … Fire up regedit (Start Menu > Search programs and files > regedit.exe) unable to open and remove the following key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Now you should not see this annoying message box every time Windows starts up. But it also means that Tomcat 6 Monitor will not be started on Windows startup. Running Tomcat 6 Monitor manually You may still want to run the Tomcat 6 Monitor since it does provide nice shortcuts for configuring and monitoring the state of your Tomcat 6 service. You can execute the Tomcat 6 Monitor via Run as administrator or you can configure the shortcut in the Start Menu to always execute the application as administrator. Find the shortcut to the Tomcat 6 Monitor in the Start Menu (Start Menu > Apache Tomcat 6.0 > Monitor Tomcat) and right-click on it. Select Properties. Click on the Shortcut tab in the Monitor Tomcat Properties window. Click on the Advanced button and check the Run as administrator checkbox. Click Continue on the Dialog that pops up and now you should be able to start the Tomcat 6 Monitor by simply clicking the shortcut in the Start Menu. Windows will still flash the UAC though since you are running this application as administrator. Update: 05 December 2010 The comment by Scot shows once again that there is always more than one way to skin a cat. Thanks Scot. If you would still li

Here is what's probably happening: Windows is trying to launch the Tomcat6w.exe (aka the Tomcat Monitor system tray object) because it's in the "Run" section of the registry. Since this tool allows changes to the registry, Windows probably requires Admin rights to run it. I had fits with this on Windows 2008 Server even for someone with admin rights until I lessened the stupid security a bit. You can still run it manually if you need it as an adminfrom the menu.Someone please correct if this is incorrect.-----Original Message-----From: bhavik shahSent: Wednesday, November 11, 2009 1:53 PMTo: Tomcat Users ListSubject: Error - Unable to open the service 'Tomcat6' on Windows 2003Hi,I have installed the Tomcat 6.0.20 on windows 2003 server.
