The bcp utility can be used to import large numbers of new rows into SQL Server tables or to export data out of tables into data files. Except when used with the queryout option, the utility requires no knowledge of Transact-SQL. To import data into a table, you must either use a format file created for that table or understand the structure of the table and the types of data that are valid for its columns. For the syntax conventions that are used for the bcp syntax, see Transact-SQL Syntax Conventions (Transact-SQL). Note If you use bcp to back up your data, create a format file to record the data format. bcp data files do not include any schema or format information, so if a table or view is dropped and you do not have a format file, you may be unable to import the data.Syntax bc

In some text file there is an error in data type so I am getting error message in output result but this is not raising any exception in catch block sample: set @cmd='BCP In' declare @xpcmdResult int EXEC @xpcmdResult=xp_cmdShell @cmd @xpcmdResult should result o or 1 based upon the bcp process success sql sql-server share|improve this question edited Mar 22 '12 at 6:01 marc_s 450k918621027 asked Mar http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9816607/how-to-catch-exception-in-bcp-process-in-sql-server-2008 22 '12 at 4:50 Buzz 2,65931738 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted BCP doesn't set its return code in the way you might expect. There are a number of ways in which a BCP command may fail without the return code being set to 1. The most reliable way I have found of detecting BCP errors is to parse STDOUT for the text "error" or "warning", since either of these may be output without the returncode being set to 1. As Pondlife mentions, if you have the option of using BULK INSERT then use that instead. share|improve this answer edited Mar 15 at 8:09 answered Mar 22 '12 at 15:00 Ed Harper 16k33462 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Why are you using xp_cmdshell when BULK INSERT or OPENROWSET would be easier? Then you have everything in TSQL so you should be able to catch the exception. You should probably also review the general guidelines for bulk importing data. An alternative would be to use SSIS, but that might be overkill if you are just importing a single text file. share|improve this answer answered Mar 22 '12 at 10:47 Pondlife 12.6k52242 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote Here's an article specifically on tr

0 Serrano OP David3082 May 29, 2013 at 7:43 UTC You have a scheduled task or process that is executing the BCP.exe process. This is the command line version of SQL that will unable to open allow you to login and bulk process SQL queries. 0 Serrano OP garyleung May 30, 2013 at 1:22 UTC Hmm..checked the task scheduler on server..found nothing related to bcp.exe. Don't see bcp.exe under processes tab of task manager either. 0 Chipotle OP Tom4137 May 30, 2013 at 3:09 UTC also check sql under sql agent - jobs - right click properties - check process steps - check each step use edit 0 Serrano OP garyleung May 30, 2013 at 3:57 UTC Check our SQL server Tom4137, looked at jobs but see nothing related to bcp.exe. I'm starting to think it may have something to do with Backup My Info! that installed on the server. Not sure if anyone here has experience with that product. 0 Chipotle OP Tom4137 May 31, 2013 at 1:17 UTC different attack of issue - where cannot find the offending process, skipping that issue altogether - see if can run bcp import into test database
